Renowned singer Pratul Mukhopadhyay passes away
Veteran Bengali singer-songwriter Pratul Mukhopadhyay has passed away. He was 83.
After a prolonged illness, he breathed his last in the early hours of Saturday, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy in Bengali music. True to the spirit of his own song, it seemed as though he had set sail on an 'unknown sea'.
Mukhopadhyay had been battling health complications since the beginning of the year and was undergoing treatment at a government hospital under the supervision of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
A long-time admirer of his music, the Chief Minister ensured that he received proper medical care during his final days.
Enam Ahmed Chowdhury passes away
Pratul Mukhopadhyay was best known for his soul-stirring compositions, including Ami Banglar Gaan Gai and Ochena Sagore Dinga Bhasiyechi, songs that remain deeply etched in the hearts of his listeners. His music resonated with themes of identity, belonging, and the spirit of Bengal.
Following his demise, the Bengali music fraternity has been left grief-stricken.
Pratul Mukhopadhyay’s contributions to Bengali music remain invaluable, and his passing marks the end of an era. Fans and well-wishers are mourning the loss of an artist whose melodies will continue to inspire generations to come.

Former CEC Abdur Rouf passes away
Former Justice and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Md Abdur Rouf has passed away while undergoing treatment at a city hospital. He was 95.
Rouf breathed his last at 10am on Sunday while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit at private Insaf Barakah Kidney and General Hospital Dhaka, said his personal assistant Md Tawhid.
As per the family's wish, Rouf will be laid to rest in his ancestral home in Mymensingh after official procedures in Dhaka, said Tawhid.
JusticeRouf played role as the 5th CEC after the fall of HM Ershad regime in the 1990s.
Following the formation of Bangladesh's first caretaker government, headed by Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed, Justice Rouf was appointed as the CEC.
For the first time during the interim government's tenure, Bangladesh had a three-member Election Commission (EC). Justice Rouf joined as the CEC the day after Justice Sultan Hossain Khan’s resignation.
Under Justice Rouf ’s leadership, the 5th parliamentary elections were held on February 27, 1991, with BNP and Awami League 140 and 88 securing seats respectively.
The Rouf Commission, during the caretaker government’s tenure, made significant reforms to the electoral law and issued the Election Officer (Special Provision) Ordinance.
On April 18, 1995, Justice AbdurRouf resigned from the position of CEC and returned to his position as an HC judge.
He was appointed as a judge of the Appellate Division in June 1995 and retired on February 1, 1999.
After retirement, he served as Shariah adviser for Fareast Islami Life Insurance Company Ltd and Prime Islamic Life Insurance Company.
He also served as the central president of the national children and youth organisation, ‘Phulkuri Ashar.'

Prince Karim Aga Khan IV passes away
Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, and 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims passed away peacefully in Lisbon on February 4, surrounded by his family. He was 88.
Prince Karim Aga Khan was the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
The announcement of his designated successor will follow.

Leaders and staff of the Aga Khan Development Network offered condolences to the family of Prince Karim Aga Khan and to the Ismaili community worldwide.

Enam Ahmed Chowdhury passes away
Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, former Chairman of the Privatisation Commission has passed away at the age of 87.Chowdhury breathed his last after suffering from a heart attack at his residence in Dhaka’s Banani on Monday. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to the hospital, doctors declared him dead upon arrival, said his son Nadim Ahmed Chowdhury.

He also held key positions with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and as Economic Minister in London.Chowdhury retired from government service in the late 1990s but remained active in politics. He formally joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1999 and later served as the Chairman of the Privatisation Commission during the BNP-Jamaat coalition government in 2001. He was also appointed Vice Chairman of the BNP and later joined the Awami League in December 2018.

Senior journalist Nizam Uddin laid to rest
Senior journalist and business editor of The Daily Observer Nizam Uddin Ahmed was buried at his family graveyard in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram district on Wednesday.
The burial took place after his namaz-e-janaza at the Chunati Sufi Miyaji Para Eidgah Maidan after Maghrib prayers.
Leaders of the newly elected committee of the Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ), along with leaders from the BFUJ and Chittagong Journalists Housing Society, were present during the burial.
They also expressed their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of the deceased.

"We, the DCAB family, are heartbroken at this irreplaceable loss. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, and may his soul rest in eternal peace," they said in a message of condolence.

Business Editor of The Daily Observer Nizam Uddin Ahmed died while undergoing treatment at a city hospital early Wednesday. He was 71.
Journalist Nizam Uddin breathed his last at 4:30am while receiving treatment at Aurora Specialised Hospital in Dhaka, said an obituary note sent from the Dhaka Reporters Uniry (DRU) on Wednesday.
The veteran journalist and also a freedom fighter is survived by wife, two sons, a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

DCAB condoles death of journo Nizam
Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) on Wednesday expressed deep shock at the death of freedom fighter and business editor of The Daily Observer Nizam Uddin Ahmed.
Fondly remembering journalist Nizam Uddin's close attachment with the DCAB as an all-time well-wisher, DCAB President AKM Moinuddin and General Secretary Md Arifuzzaman Mamun expressed profound shock at his sudden death and offered prayers for the eternal peace of his departed soul.
"We, the DCAB family, are heartbroken at this irreplaceable loss. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, and may his soul rest in eternal peace," they said in a message of condolence.
Nizam Uddin, who also worked for international news agency Reuters, breathed his last around 5:50am on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Aurora Specialized Hospital. He was 71.
He left behind his wife, two sons, and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
The body of Nizam is being taken to his village home in Chattogram's Lohagara. He will be buried there after Asr prayer.

Ex-army chief KM Shafiullah passes away
Former army chief and valiant freedom fighter KM Shafiullah died on Sunday morning at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka. He was 91.
Shafiullah breathed his last at 8:45am at the hospital, said Rashadul Alam Khan, assistant director at Inter Services Public Relation (ISPR) Directorate.
The former army chief, also commander of sector 3 during the Liberation War, was admitted to CMH on January 2 with various health complications.

His first Namaj-e-Janaza was held at Rupganj after Zuhr prayers.
He will be buried at Military Graveyard at Banani following his second Namaz-e-Janaza at Dhaka Cantonment.
KM Saifullah was born on September 2 in 1934, in Rupganj of Narayanganj.
He served as the chief of army staff from 1972 to 1975 and served as ambassador in Malaysia, Canada, Sweden, and the UK.

Joules Power MD Nuher Khan laid to rest
Joules Power Ltd Managing Director Nuher Latif Khan has been laid to rest at Banani Army Graveyard in Dhaka.
Earlier, his namaz-e-janaza was held at Baridhara Diplomatic Zone Zam-e-Masjid after Asr prayers on Saturday.
Nuher breathed his last on the morning of January 14 due to a severe heart attack. He was 42.
Nuher was the founder and managing director of Desh Energy Ltd. Under his leadership, the company developed a portfolio generating 110 MW of electricity, comprising liquid fuel and gas-based power plants.

After leaving his role at Desh Energy Ltd. in 2013, he shifted his focus to renewable energy and founded Joules Power Limited (JPL). As JPL MD, Nuher implemented Bangladesh’s first 20MW AC utility-scale, national grid-tied solar power plant at Teknaf.
During his short life, he also developed another 20 MW AC grid-tied solar project at Muktagacha, along with several rooftop OPEX portfolios.

Mohammad Hafizur Rahman, father-in-law of Daily Sun Editor Md Rezaul Karim Lotus, passed away on Thursday. He was 92.
He breathed his last at 1:05 pm at his residence in Dhaka's Bashundhara Residential Area.
Journalist Mahmodul Hoque no more
Hafizur Rahman, a former senior official of the Bangladesh Bank, left behind two daughters, one son, five grandchildren, and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.
Hafizur Rahman hailed from Sohagdal village in Nesarabad upazila under Pirojpur district.

The namaz-e-janaza for the deceased was held at the C Block Mosque in the capital’s Bashundhara Residential Area after Maghrib prayers.
He will be laid to rest in his family graveyard in Pirojpur after another namaz-e-janaza on Friday.
