The Israeli military warned that attacks on Tehran’s military infrastructure would continue "over the coming days," with symbolic locations also becoming targets. The statement, posted on X, comes as Iran faces severe internet blackouts, limiting external communications. The latest Israeli strikes followed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks questioning Iran's leadership, a day after U.S. stealth bombers targeted three Iranian nuclear facilities. “If the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change???” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. White House defends its massive bombing campaign against Iran  White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later downplayed the remarks, saying Trump was merely posing a question. Nevertheless, Tehran reacted angrily, warning of direct retaliation against American troops or interests, particularly in the already volatile Middle East, where Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza continues. Evin Prison and Military Sites Targeted In Tehran, Israeli missiles damaged the gate of Evin Prison, known for holding dual nationals and Western detainees used by Iran as leverage in negotiations. The prison is also notorious for its political prisoner units, run by the elite Revolutionary Guard, which answers directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Both the U.S. and EU have sanctioned the facility. There were no immediate reports of casualties or severe damage, though the semi-official Tasnim news agency mentioned power outages outside Tehran following the Israeli strikes. Iranian state television aired footage allegedly from inside Evin Prison, showing the situation under control. However, the Washington-based Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights expressed deep concern over detainees' safety, citing family members' fears. Meanwhile, Iran’s top military officer, Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi, warned Washington that its actions had granted Iranian forces the “free hand” to strike U.S. interests and personnel. Tens of thousands of American troops are stationed across the region, many within reach of Iran’s short-range missiles. Israel also confirmed it targeted roads near Iran's Fordo nuclear enrichment site, aiming to block access. This follows Sunday’s U.S. airstrikes on three key Iranian nuclear locations, including Fordo. Israel provided few details on the attack. “The Iranian dictator will face the full force of punishment for targeting Israeli civilians,” Israel’s Defense Ministry declared. Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus is likely to pay an official visit to Indonesia in August as both sides eye an enhanced trade, investment and cultural ties between Bangladesh and Southeast Asia’s largest nation. Officials from both sides are working on finding specific dates convenient to both sides, a diplomatic source told UNB on Monday, adding that Jakarta is eager to deepen its engagement with Dhaka. Cooperation in the areas of power and energy sector between Bangladesh and Indonesia is going to be one of the focus areas during the visit, once finalised, according to officials. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already sought inputs from the relevant ministry on cooperation in the areas of power and sector with Indonesia. The Chief Adviser will have a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, during the planned visit in addition to his other engagements. Indonesian Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir, who visited Bangladesh earlier this month, described Bangladesh as their ‘strategic’ and an ‘important trade partner’ in the South Asia region. In a powerful reaffirmation of Bangladesh’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the capital is set to host this year’s Environment Fair and Tree Fair from June 25, drawing attention to urgent ecological concerns and sustainable solutions. A final draft of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy has been completed, and special coastal protection plans are being implemented in 40 upazilas, including eight in Chattogram, declared ‘Exposed Coasts’. Between November 2024 and June 2025, 434 mobile courts acted against 815 organisations, collecting Tk 63 lakh in fines and seizing 2.33 lakh kilograms of banned polythene. In an effort to restore forestland, 1,717 acres were reclaimed since August 2024, reversing illegal allocations, including a major move to recover 4,104 acres from the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) in Mirsarai, Chattogram. Rizwana highlighted a long-term greening effort spanning decades: from FY 1995–96 to FY 2023–24, over 426,000 hectares of block plantations and 72,581 kilometres of strip plantations have been established, with more than 2.06 billion saplings planted and distributed. The government has disbursed Tk 505 crore to 250,000 beneficiaries under the social forestry programme. World Environment Day being observed with call to beat plastic pollution  In the arena of wildlife conservation, targeted programmes are ongoing to protect elephants, vultures, freshwater stingrays, migratory birds, sharks, dolphins, and gharials. The Wildlife Conservation Act has been updated, the controversial safari park project in Lawachara scrapped, and a biodiversity zone declared in Purbachal. Environmental regulation efforts have also intensified: 1,063 mobile courts have been deployed to curb air, noise and river pollution, resulting in 2,499 legal actions, Tk 25.35 crore in fines, and the shutdown of 481 illegal brick kilns. Oman has announced plans to introduce personal income tax as part of efforts to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil revenues, according to the state-run Oman News Agency on Sunday. The new tax, established through a royal decree, marks the first of its kind among the six oil-rich member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). However, the 5% income tax will not take effect until 2028 and will apply only to individuals earning more than $109,000 annually, placing the burden solely on the top 1% of income earners in Oman. It remains unclear whether this move will influence other Gulf nations to adopt similar policies. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has previously forecast that Gulf states may need to introduce new forms of taxation to reduce their reliance on oil and broaden state revenue streams. Oil prices jump following US strikes on Iran The Gulf region’s longstanding absence of personal income tax has been a major factor in attracting expatriate workers, supporting economic development across the area. For Oman, however, the introduction of income tax is aimed at bolstering financial stability by expanding revenue sources beyond oil and gas, said Minister of Economy Said bin Mohammed Al-Saqri. He noted that depending on market conditions, oil and gas can contribute up to 85% of Oman’s public revenues. "The tax serves as a new revenue stream to diversify public income sources and mitigate risks associated with reliance on oil as the primary revenue source," Al-Saqri stated. A total of eight police officials, including five officers-in-charge (OCs) of several police stations in Brahmanbaria district have been transferred together, citing public interest. The transfer orders were issued in an official notification signed by Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police (SP) Ehteshamul Haque on Sunday night, instructing the officials to join their new posts immediately. According to the order, OCs of Bancharampur, Sarail, Ashuganj, Nasirnagar, and Nabinagar police stations were transferred. Bancharampur OC Morshedul Alam was appointed as OC of Sarail police station, while Nasirnagar OC Md Khairul Alam was posted as OC of Ashuganj. Meanwhile, Sarail OC Md Rafiqul Hasan and Ashuganj OC Mohammad Billal Hossain were transferred to Brahmanbaria Sadar Court as inspectors while Nabinagar OC Abdur Razzak was appointed as an inspector in the District Special Branch (DSB). Rokeya University teacher Mahamud gets bail; OC transferred Moreover, inspector Muhammad Azharul Islam, who was previously posted at the Police Lines, was appointed as OC of Nasirnagar police station. Bangladesh reported three more deaths and 19 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours till Monday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). With the latest figures, the death toll has risen to 29,518 and total number of confirmed cases in the country has reached 20, 51,997. Police recovered the skeleton of an unidentified person in Lohagora, Narail. The skeleton was recovered from a sesame field in the Kola area of ​​Dighalia union of the upazila on Monday afternoon. Police arrested two people in connection with a robbery and gang-rape in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila. The arrestees were identified as Md Sohel and Nur Karim. They were detained during raids at different locations in the Sadar area on Saturday night, police said. According to the case statement, a six-member robbery gang stormed into the house of Amir Hossain in Char Mansa village under Teowariganj union in the early hours of Friday with locally made weapons. The robbers tied up Amir Hossain looted cash and gold ornaments, and at one stage, gang-raped his wife. As two of the attackers were locals, the victims could recognise them. Inclement weather halts water transport on Bhola-Lakshmipur route Later, Amir filed a case with Sadar Police Station naming two men and four unnamed others. Jhalak Mohonto, investigation officer of the police station, said, “We launched drives soon after the case was filed and arrested two accused. They were produced before the court.” The rape survivor was sent to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital for medical examination, the officer said, adding that efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) on Monday announced a proposed budget of Tk 2,145.42 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year, alongside a revised budget of Tk 1,221.96 crore for the ongoing 2024-25 fiscal. Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain presented the budgets at an event held at the Theatre Institute auditorium in the city on Monday afternoon. Speaking at the event, the mayor said he inherited a Tk 600 crore debt when taking office. “This is my first budget as mayor but the fifth budget of the sixth CCC board.” He said, “Despite our limited resources, I want to assure the city residents that I will continue my relentless efforts for the welfare and comfort of people, with their cooperation and support.” According to the mayor, when he assumed office on November 3, 2024, CCC’s outstanding debt stood at Tk 596 crore. Through gradual repayments, total liabilities have now reduced to Tk 400 crore. Proposed budget 'traditional', lacking major reform approaches: Seminar He also highlighted that for the first time the CCC successfully collected Tk 140 crore in municipal tax from the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA). In addition, the CCC has cleared Tk 65.76 crore from development assistance funds and nearly Tk 60 crore received from the World Bank as Covid-19 aid. Other payments include Tk 34.46 crore in income tax, Tk 38.16 crore in VAT, Tk 19.18 crore in gratuity funds, and Tk 27.86 crore towards employee provident funds. The mayor also mentioned that monthly allowances of Tk 50,000 each are being distributed to 400 people on a regular basis. “Automation of the budget and accounting system has begun with JICA’s support,” Shahadat added. “We expect to bring the entire accounts department under automation within the next fiscal year, which will significantly increase revenue collection and make CCC financially self-reliant.” Council of Advisers says ‘yes’ to budget, ‘no’ to black money Currently, there are 214,673 holdings and 126,834 trade licenses under CCC’s jurisdiction. Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto suffered another injury scare on Monday, taking a blow to his finger during a slip-catching drill ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Meghna Economic Zone Ltd. (MEZL), a venture under Meghna Group of Industries (MGI), Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) PLC and Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) on Monday signed a tripartite agreement to ensure uninterrupted power supply to its industrial area. This agreement will provide a 100-megawatt (MW) electricity connection at the 230 KV level from PGCB's Meghnaghat Grid Substation, according to a press release issued by Meghna Group. Signatories to the agreement were Dilruba Sirajee, secretary of BREB; Md. Jahangir Azad, company secretary of Power Grid Company of Bangladesh PLC; and Mostafa Kamal, chairman and managing director of MGI. Bangladesh's apparel exports to the European Union (EU) witnessed a notable surge, reaching US$8.07 billion during the January-April period of 2025, up significantly from $6.51 billion in the same period of 2024. This impressive growth represents a 23.98 percent rise in the country’s readymade garment (RMG) exports, largely fuelled by a 19.71 percent increase in export volume. According to Eurostat, the EU’s global apparel imports also saw substantial growth in the first four months of 2025, rising by 14.21 percent to a total of $32.49 billion. This overall rise was accompanied by a notable 15.84 percent increase in volume, despite a slight 1.41 percent drop in average unit prices. Bangladesh's RMG exports show moderate growth, EU remains key market Bangladesh’s performance is particularly commendable for its rising unit prices across various categories within the EU, even as China maintains its leading position and Vietnam continues to post strong results. The sector, however, faces several challenges, including growing tensions in the US market and intensifying competition from China within the EU. Besides, the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel poses significant concerns for businesses, causing trade disruptions and increased operational costs. Industry experts stress the importance of Bangladesh maintaining its competitive edge and planning strategically for sustained growth in the EU market. The Communist Party of China (CPC) has invited BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to visit China at a convenient time. CPC Central Committee Politburo member and Vice Chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, Li Hongzhong, extended the formal invitation during a meeting with a high-level BNP delegation, led by its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, on Monday, said BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan. Li Hongzhong, along with other senior CPC leaders, held the meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The CPC leaders welcomed the BNP delegation at the start of the meeting. “During the meeting, Li Hongzhong formally invited BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to visit China in the future,” Sayrul said. Tarique urges govt to mount pressure on Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation He said the CPC leaders hoped that the meeting would begin a new chapter in China-Bangladesh relations. The Election Commission has collected information about Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, for her inclusion in the voter list. EC officials said her information was gleaned during the recent door-to-door data collection in Dhaka. “Zubaida Rahman’s information has been gathered under the ongoing voter list updating programme,” EC senior secretary Akhtar Ahmed told the media on Monday. He said a name is included in the final voter list on completion of the entire updating process following the data collection and registration. As per electoral laws, a person must be a registered voter to contest in any election. In the case of the parliamentary election, a voter can contest elections from any constituency in the country. The photograph-based voter registration process began in 2008, when Tarique Rahman and Zubaida Rahman were in London as they left Bangladesh for London on September 11, 2008 and they have been living there since then. Zubaida Rahman departs for London But on May 06 last, Zubaida returned to Bangladesh accompanying BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia after the latter’s medical treatment in London. She left for London again on June 5 last. EC officials collected Zubaida’s personal information in Dhaka before Eid-ul-Azha. According to the law, the draft voter list must be published by January 2 next year, with the final list due by March 2. However, if the next general election is held in February, the Election Commission is considering amending the law to finalise the list earlier. Zubaida, a physician by profession, was born on May 18, 1972, in Dakshin Surma Upazila of Sylhet District. After passing her higher secondary examinations with distinction, she went on to study at Dhaka Medical College. She married Tarique Rahman on February 3, 1994. Zubaida passed the MBBS examination with distinction and began her career as a government doctor through the BCS in 1995, securing first place in the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS-Health) examination.

Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has refused to confirm or deny media reports that he plans to quit the post after the ongoing two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Speaking to reporters at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo ahead of the second and final Test, he said he remained focused on the immediate task at hand, brushing aside questions about his potential resignation. “There’s a lot of talk going on, as always,” he said with a smile. “But I don’t want to comment on that now. Two more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Monday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 34 this year. During the period, 392 more patients were hospitalised with viral fever, raising the total infected-case to 2, 411 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). According to the DGHS, new cases were reported as follows: 126 Barishal Division (Out of CC), 80 in Chattogram Division (Out of CC), 25 in Khulna Division (Out of CC), one each in Rangpur and Mymensingh Divisions (Out of CC), 41 in Rajshahi Division (Out of CC), 31 Dhaka Division (Out of CC), 22 in Dhaka North City Corporation and 64 in Dhaka South City Corporation.  Last year, dengue claimed the lives of 575 people. Dengue: 1 dead, 352 new cases reported in 24hrs In 2023, 1,705 people lost their lives due to dengue, making it the deadliest year on record. The DGHS recorded 321,179 dengue cases and 3, 18,749 recoveries in the same year.

A Dhaka court on Monday placed former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda on a four-day remand in a case over election manipulation. Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mustafizur Rahman passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the investigation officer of the case, said Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court’s Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi. Earlier, he was produced before the court with a plea for a 10-day remand, he said. On Sunday evening, police detained Nurul Huda from his residence in the capital’s Uttara area. The detention came just hours after a case was filed by the BNP at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Sunday morning, accusing 24 people, including former Chief Election Commissioners, Election Commissioners and other officials involved in conducting the 10th, 11th and 12th national elections, of irregularities and biased conduct. Ex-CEC KM Nurul Huda detained from Uttara residence Earlier on Sunday, a four-member BNP delegation led by National Executive Committee member Salahuddin Khan filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The complaint named 24 people, including former CECs Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda and Kazi Habibul Awal, along with several unidentified persons. BNP alleges that the 2014, 2018, and 2024 general elections were manipulated and held in a partisan manner, despite repeated calls for a non-partisan caretaker government and the deployment of army personnel with magistracy powers during polling.

Bangladesh Secretariat employees will observe a mass campaign on Tuesday demanding the cancellation of the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance-2025. The announcement came on Monday after the employees staged a two-hour work abstention programme from 11 am to 1 pm as part of their ongoing movement. During the work stoppage, employees from various ministries and departments gathered at the Central Library on the third floor of Building-2 in the Secretariat. Speaking at the event, Md Badiul Kabir, Co-chairman of Bangladesh Secretariat Officers-Employees Unity Forum, said, “We will conduct a mass campaign inside the Secretariat tomorrow (Tuesday) to press home our demand for repealing the ordinance.” Secretariat employees to observe 2-hour work abstention today Urging employees’ leaders to refrain from making provocative remarks, another Co-chairman of the forum Nurul Islam said, “We have not received any positive message from authorities. Former Chief Election Commissioners have been publicly humiliated, paraded with shoes around their necks. Those currently misusing power should take lessons, as everyone will face consequences for their actions.” Secretariat employees launched their movement on May 24, demanding the withdrawal of the draft Public Service Ordinance after its approval by the Advisory Council. The government, however, promulgated the ordinance on May 25 amid protests. According to the ordinance, employees can be dismissed without departmental proceedings for four categories of disciplinary offences, with only a show-cause notice required. Ahead of the Eid holidays, employees staged protests inside the Secretariat until June 3. They also submitted memorandums to seven government advisers, warning of tougher protests if the ordinance was not scrapped by June 15. Secretariat employees to observe 2-hour work abstention on Monday On June 4, the Cabinet Division formed a review committee led by Law Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul to assess the ordinance and submit recommendations. France’s top financial watchdog has provided the first official estimate of public spending linked to the 2024 Paris Olympics, placing the overall figure at nearly six billion euros ($6.8 billion). In a preliminary report released Monday, the Cour des Comptes (Court of Auditors) outlined that €2.77 billion has been allocated for organizing the Games, while €3.19 billion has gone toward infrastructure investments. Around 8,000 people across southern Israel have been left without electricity following Iran’s missile strikes early Monday, according to Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen. The Environment and Tree Fair will commence on Wednesday beside the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar of Dhaka. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, disclosed it at a press conference held at the Ministry. She informed that the environment fair will run from June 25 to June 27, while the Tree Fair will continue until July 24. Both fairs will remain open to the public daily from 9am to 9pm. The adviser also announced that the inaugural ceremony will be held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center on June 25, where Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus will be present as the Chief Guest. At the event, the National Environment Award 2024, the National Wildlife Conservation Award 2025, and the National Tree Plantation Award 2024 will be given for contributions to environmental and wildlife protection. Additionally, profit-sharing cheques will be distributed among beneficiaries of the Social Forestry Programme. Rizwana stated that the current government is working tirelessly to control environmental pollution, address the adverse impacts of climate change, and enhance forest resources. To ensure public participation, this year’s World Environment Day, Environment Fair, National Tree Plantation Campaign, and Tree Fair are being observed nationwide. This year’s theme for World Environment Day is: "Beat Plastic Pollution" and the theme for the Tree Plantation Campaign is: "Let’s Plant in a Planned Way to Build a Green Bangladesh." In celebration of these events, various awareness activities such as art, debate, and slogan competitions, seminars, and industry-related awareness programmes will be held in 100 educational institutions in Dhaka and across district and sub-district levels. The draft of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework has been finalized, and special action plans are being implemented in eight coastal areas of Chattogram and forty coastal upazilas declared as ‘Exposed Coast’. From November 2024 to June 2025, a total of 434 mobile court operations were conducted against 815 establishments, resulting in fines amounting to approximately Tk 60.3 lakh and seizure of 233,000 kg of banned polythene. Since August 2024, 1,717 acres of illegally occupied forest land have been reclaimed and brought under the Forest Department. Allocations under government and private projects have been cancelled. The government has initiated recovery of 4,104 acres of land previously allocated to BEZA in Mirsharai, Chattogram. As part of long-term afforestation planning from FY 1995–96 to 2023–24, the government has created 426,842 hectares of block plantations, 72,581 kilometers of strip plantations, and distributed or planted over 2.06 billion saplings. Profit-sharing worth Tk 5.05 billion has been distributed among 250,000 social forestry beneficiaries. Conservation efforts for elephants, vultures, freshwater stingrays, migratory birds, sharks, dolphins, and gharials are ongoing. The Wildlife Conservation Act has been updated. The proposed safari park in Lathitila, Moulvibazar has been cancelled and a new biodiversity zone has been declared in Purbachal. To combat air, noise, and river pollution, 1,063 mobile courts have been conducted, resulting in 2,499 cases, over Tk 253.5 million in fines, and the closure of 481 illegal brick kilns. New initiatives have been launched to enforce environmental protection in Ecologically Critical Areas (ECAs). At the end of the press conference, Syeda Rizwana Hasan emphasized that while the government is committed to environmental protection, active media engagement and public participation are essential. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Reform Unity Council on Monday threatened to enforce a complete shutdown of all tax, customs and VAT offices across the country starting Saturday if NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan is not removed from his post. Council President Hasan Muhammad Tarek Rikabdar and General Secretary Sehela Siddika issued the threat at a press conference held at the NBR headquarters in Agargaon. They alleged that the chairman is acting as a “political agent of the former Awami League government” and is attempting to destabilise the country’s revenue system. As part of their ongoing protest, officers and staff of various NBR offices in Dhaka observed a sit-in at the NBR headquarters on Monday. A pen-down strike was also observed from 9 am to 12 pm, with several participants wearing symbolic white shrouds. The Council alleged that five officials of the Income Tax Wing were transferred on Sunday what it termed ‘retaliatory measures’. NBR officials begin pen-down strike again These included two officials from the Intelligence and Investigation Unit, one from the NBR Board Office, and two others from tax zones in Dhaka and Cumilla. Terming the transfers “vindictive and oppressive,” the Council said at the press conference that if the orders are not withdrawn by Monday a fresh round of protests will begin on Tuesday. The new programme includes a sit-in and pen-down strike from 9 am to 2 pm at all tax, customs and VAT offices nationwide—except for international passenger services and exports. If similar transfer orders are issued again, further programs will follow on June 25 and 26, including sit-ins and pen-down strikes from 12 pm to 5 pm, also exempting international passenger and export services. The Council warned that if the Chairman is not removed and the transfer orders not cancelled by June 27 a “complete and indefinite shutdown” of all customs, VAT, and income tax offices will begin on Saturday. In a written statement, the Council leaders said that the NBR Chairman has recently transferred senior commissioners in violation of established transfer policy out of vindictiveness. At the same time, he appointed a controversial officer to a sensitive position in the tax administration, it said.  NBR officials to observe sit-in Monday They also accused the Chairman of mobilising outsiders through a syndicate to incite violence against their peaceful movement and intimidating participating officers with threats of punishment and further transfers. “These actions are disrupting a normal work environment and could severely impact revenue collection,” the statement adds.

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday said their party does not endorse mob culture and will take disciplinary action if any of its activists are found involved in the incident of former Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda. "We do not believe in mob culture, we have relentlessly been struggling to establish the rule of law. We want the rule of law to be established in the country,” he told UNB. Salahuddin said BNP wants court verdicts implemented with transparency and expects due legal process in the arrest and trial of Nurul Huda. “But we don’t support the humiliating treatment he was subjected to. It was an isolated incident. If any BNP leader or activist is found involved in it, we will take disciplinary action following an investigation….this is our clear stance,” he said. Govt warns against mob justice, vows action against chaos creators Salahuddin said BNP wants every person, no matter how serious he did, to enjoy his legal and constitutional rights. “No matter how big a criminal he is, his legal and constitutional rights should not be violated," he added. On Sunday night, former CEC Nurul Huda, who oversaw the 2018 national election, was arrested after a mob assaulted him at his Uttara residence in the capital. A video that went viral on social media shows Huda was dressed in a white T-shirt and Lungi with a garland of shoes around his neck. At one stage, a man strikes Huda in the face with a shoe. The video drew widespread criticism. Criticising Huda for his role in weakening democratic institutions, Salahuddin said, "Nurul Huda is one of the few persons responsible for destroying democracy in Bangladesh and completely destroying the electoral system.” Khulna AL leader beaten up by mob before being taken into police custody Salahuddin said several other persons are responsible for completely corrupting and destroying several state constitutional institutions to prolong Sheikh Hasina's fascist rule. Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday dismissed reports of former Chief Election Commissioner Habibul Awal’s arrest, saying the news circulated on Sunday was incorrect. "The news published yesterday (Sunday) regarding the arrest of former CEC Habibul Awal is not correct, he has not been arrested yet. It is Nurul Huda who has been arrested," he said while talking to reporters after visiting the Horticulture Centre in Mouchak area of Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur on Monday morning. The Home Adviser said mob violence carried out during the detention of ex-CEC KM Nurul Huda is in no way acceptable. “The way mob justice was carried out during his detention is not acceptable. Such chaos took place in the presence of law enforcers. An investigation will be conducted. If any member of the law enforcement agencies is found involved legal action will be taken,” he added. The adviser said the government is working to formulate a law to protect agricultural land from illegal occupation. Govt warns against mob justice, vows action against chaos creators He stressed the importance of increasing the production of local fruits alongside foreign varieties to ensure that native fruits are not lost. You must remember that you can create the world of the future with your scouting experience,” he said. The Chief Adviser presented the highest award of Cub Scouts, the ‘Shapla Cub Award’, and the 'Gallantry Award' of Bangladesh Scouts to the family members of eight scouts who were martyred in the July movement for their bravery. Bangladesh Scouts Day to be observed Monday The Chief Adviser shared his personal experiences of getting involved in scouting at an early stage of his life. In the year 1955, Prof Yunus was part of the boy scout group who got the chance to travel to Europe and North America to the 10th World Jamboree of Boy Scouts held in Canada. “Today is a special day in the history of scouting. Not only in the case of scouting in Bangladesh, but in the case of scouting in the whole world, today is a day of special pride,” Prof Yunus said, adding that this history was created with the eight scouts who sacrificed their lives for the country, for the people of the country, and to create a new Bangladesh. He said there is no such precedent anywhere else in the history of scouting. “We congratulate the Scouts of Bangladesh on behalf of the whole world for creating history.” Congratulating the awardees, Prof Yunus said those who received the award and those who are present today - it is the responsibility of all of them to open the doors for others. “Don’t stay in regret that the doors are closed. You have to open the doors. Since you have come a long way, because you have come forward, you have become a Scout, while the rest of your school has not. So it is your responsibility to open the doors for others. If you do not open, this door will remain closed,” said the Chief Adviser. At least 10 members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed in Israeli airstrikes targeting Yazd province on Sunday, according to Tasnim news agency. The report also mentioned that several other IRGC personnel were injured, though the exact number remains unclear. Israel claims it has eliminated two dozen Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists since launching its surprise offensive on June 13. Two people were stabbed to death in separate places in the capital on Sunday night. The deceased were identified as Md Rifat, 22, son of Shahin from Benarashi Palli area of Mirpur-11, and Md Rocky, 32, son of Aman from Isak Member Lane of Matbor Bazar, Kamrangirchar. Shahin, father of Rifat, said his son was a student of Jannat Academy in Mirpur-12 and appeared for the SSC examinations last year. Around 10:50 pm on Sunday, Rifat was stabbed during an altercation with his friend Asif over a dispute involving Asif’s girlfriend in Mirpur-11 area, he said. Rifat was initially taken to Islami Bank Hospital by his friends and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 11:10 pm. He succumbed to his injuries at 11:45 pm while undergoing treatment at the emergency unit, said Inspector Faruque, in-charge of DMCH police outpost. 3 killed in Ctg road accidents In another incident, Rocky was brought to DMCH by a man named Rubel with stab injuries, he said. Quoting Rubel, police said Rocky had an argument with a rickshaw puller in the morning over payment at Matbor Bazar. Later at around 12:15 am, one Palash, along with unidentified associateattacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured in his left arm and back. Rocky was declared dead at 12:50 am at DMCH.

Popular K-pop band BTS has come back to enlighten fans from their two-and -a-half-year break from their military service. Last week, RM, V, Jimin, and Jung Kook first got discharged followed by Suga after a few days. It was quite heartbreaking for their fans ( BTS ARMY) when the band hit a pause in 2022 for their mandatory 18 months in the military. Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Sunday night besieged the university’s medical centre protesting the authorities’ alleged delay in sending an ambulance following the death of a student of the university. The students blocked the main entrance of the university’s medical centre around 9:15 pm following the death of Zubair Hossain, a third-year student of the Anthropology Department. Zubair, who had been suffering from hemophilia, passed away on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. Agitating students alleged that the university’s medical centre delayed sending an ambulance for Zubair on Saturday despite repeated calls which they believe contributed to the deterioration of his condition. According to his friends, Zubair suddenly fell ill on Saturday and went to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. After feeling somewhat better he contacted the university’s medical centre, requesting an ambulance to return to campus. However, he was told that the ambulance was out of order and could not be sent to Dhaka. Jahangirnagar University: Students struggle as mosquitoes take over After nearly four hours of waiting, Zubair finally managed to return to the campus using the university's ambulance. Later, as his condition worsened again with severe abdominal pain on Sunday, Zubair was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital where he died. A video recorded by Zubair himself shortly before his death went viral on social media sparking outrage among students and criticism of the university's healthcare services. Dr Md Shamsur Rahman, the chief medical officer of JU Medical Centre, said, “Everyone at the medical centre was aware of Zubair’s illness. We provided ambulance support whenever requested. However, it’s true that yesterday, when he needed an ambulance, there was a delay due to a shortage of vehicles. Only three ambulances are operational, and all were outside the campus at the time. As soon as one became available, it was sent for Zubair.” JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan expressed deep shock over Zubair’s death.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested former reserved seat MP Sabina Akter Tuhin from Nawabganj upazila in Dhaka, and former Munshiganj-3 MP Mohammad Faisal Biplob from the capital’s Monipuripara area on Monday morning. Joint Commissioner of DB (North) Mohammad Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan said a DB team from the Wari division detained Sabina Akter Tuhin early Monday from her village home in Nawabganj based on specific allegations. She faces multiple cases involving corruption, incitement to political violence and conspiracy against the state, he added. Ex-ministers Anisul, Qamrul, 2 others shown arrested in murder cases On Sunday evening, another DB team arrested Faisal Biplob from Monipuripara in connection with a murder case linked to the recent July movement. According to DB officials, both Tuhin and Biplob had been under law enforcement surveillance as suspects in a recent incident of political violence and murder. Faisal Biplob, in particular, is accused of playing a direct role during the violence related to the July movement last year. A senior DMP official, seeking anonymity, said the arrests were made based on concrete evidence and case files, not for political harassment. DB officials added that they would seek remand for interrogation and continue operations to detain others found involved during the investigation.

The interim government has requested all citizens of the country not to take the law into their own hands, stressing that the law enforcement forces will identify all those who created a chaotic situation by creating a ‘mob’ and take appropriate action. "All accused persons will be tried in accordance with the law of the country and the court will decide on the matter and the person under trial," said the government in a statement. On Sunday, former Chief Election Commissioner Nurul Huda was arrested by the Uttara Police Station in the capital in a specific case. The statement noted that the government has taken serious notice of the chaotic situation created at that time by the mob and the physical assault on the accused. The interim government said attacking and physically assaulting the accused person is illegal, contrary to the rule of law and a criminal offense. The government requested all citizens to exercise restraint in the struggle to establish justice.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow maritime passage between Oman and Iran, has long held immense economic and geopolitical significance. As tensions in the Middle East continue to simmer—especially following recent US military deployments to counter Iranian threats—this strategic waterway has again captured global attention. Measuring just 39 kilometres at its narrowest, the strait is the only sea route connecting the oil-rich Gulf countries—namely Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates—to the Arabian Sea and beyond. Despite its limited width, shipping lanes for both inbound and outbound traffic are confined to merely 3 kilometres each, making it a sensitive and easily disrupted transit corridor. The Strait of Hormuz serves as the world’s single most important oil passageway. Over one-sixth of global oil production, equating to around 17.2 million barrels per day, passes through this narrow channel. This includes exports from key OPEC members such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait and the UAE. Moreover, Qatar, the largest global exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), also relies heavily on the strait, with approximately one-third of the world’s LNG trade funnelled through its waters. Officials and employees started a sit-in and pen-down programme at the NBR headquarters in Dhaka on Monday morning, demanding logical reforms in the National Board of Revenue (NBR). The NBR officials started the three-hour protest wearing burial clothes at 9am. The NBR Reform Unity Council, a platform comprising NBR officials, on Saturday announced the programme at a press conference at its headquarters. Council’s President and Additional Commissioner Hasan Muhammad Tarek Rikabdar and General Secretary and Additional Tax Commissioner Sehela Siddiqua reiterated their demand for rational reforms within the revenue board. The council claimed that NBR Chairman should be removed immediately, alleging that his leadership has only delayed meaningful reforms. They previously declared the Chairman “persona non grata” on the NBR premises. Criticising the NBR Reform Committee formed on June 19, the council demanded proper representation within the body. NBR officials issue ultimatum for removal of chairman The six-member committee, formed to amend revenue ordinances, comprises officials from the tax, customs and VAT wings but excludes any representatives from the reform council. Besides, no consultation was held with the council beforehand, they said. The government issued an ordinance on May 12 abolishing the NBR and the Internal Resources Division (IRD), replacing them with two new divisions: Revenue Policy Division and Revenue Management Division. Since then, NBR officials under the Reform Unity Council have been staging various protest programmes. On May 26, the government announced that necessary amendments to the ordinance would be made through discussions by July 31. As part of that process, a new committee was formed earlier today. Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) imposed a ban on all kinds of gatherings, rallies, and demonstrations from Shishu Mela to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) office and its surrounding areas at Agargaon in the capital with effect from Sunday which will remain in place until further notice, said a public notice.

The United States has called on China to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open amid rising tensions in the Middle East, warning of severe economic consequences if Iran moves ahead with plans to block the crucial waterway. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the appeal during an interview with Fox News on Sunday, saying, “I encourage the Chinese government in Beijing to call them (Iran) about that, because they heavily depend on the Straits of Hormuz for their oil.” Rubio’s comments followed a report by Iran’s state-run Press TV which claimed that the Iranian parliament had approved a plan to close the Strait. However, the final decision rests with the country’s Supreme National Security Council. “If they [close the Straits]... it will be economic suicide for them. And we retain options to deal with that, but other countries should be looking at that as well. It would hurt other countries' economies a lot worse than ours,” Rubio added. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint for global energy supplies, with around 20% of the world’s oil passing through the narrow waterway. Major oil and gas producers in the Middle East rely on the route to transport energy to global markets. Any disruption in operations could send oil prices soaring. The price of Brent crude surged to $78.89 per barrel late Sunday – the highest level in five months – after the US launched strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. “The US is now positioned with an overwhelming defence posture in the region to be prepared for any Iran counter attacks. But the risk for oil prices is the situation could escalate severely further,” said Saul Kavonic, Head of Energy Research at MST Financial. Energy analyst Vandana Hari said Iran had “little to gain and too much to lose” by closing the Strait. “Iran risks turning its oil and gas producing neighbours in the Gulf into enemies and invoking the ire of its key market China by disrupting traffic in the Strait,” Hari told BBC News. After a brief improvement in rankings, South Asian cities including India’s Delhi and Pakistan’s Lahore have once again reappeared on the list of the world’s most polluted cities and Bangladesh’s Dhaka maintained a comparatively satisfactory position on Monday morning. According to the latest Air Quality Index (AQI) report, Dhaka’s air quality showed signs of improvement with an AQI score of 77 at 9am and it ranked 21st on the list of polluted cities. Dhaka’s air was classified as ‘moderate,’ referring to a light health threat, according to the AQI index. Lahore ranked second with an AQI score of 162, while Delhi followed in third place with a score of 156. The Congolese capital, Kinshasa, topped the list as the world’s most polluted city with an AQI reading of 165. Indonesia’s Jakarta and Uganda’s Kampala occupied the fourth and fifth positions respectively, with AQI scores of 155 and 153. All top five cities on the list recorded air quality levels classified as ‘unhealthy.’ Dhaka’s air ‘moderate’ this morning  According to the AQI scale, when the AQI value for particle pollution is between 50 and 100, air quality is considered ‘moderate’, usually sensitive individuals should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion, between 101 and 150, air quality is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, between 150 and 200 is ‘unhealthy’, between 201 and 300 is said to be 'very unhealthy', while a reading of 301+ is considered 'hazardous', posing serious health risks to residents. The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon. As per World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution kills an estimated seven million people worldwide every year, mainly due to increased mortality from stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections.

North Korea has issued strong condemnation of the US strikes on Iran, calling the attacks a violation of the UN Charter. Employees at the Bangladesh Secretariat will observe a two-hour work abstention on Monday demanding the repeal of the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025. Md Nurul Islam, chairman of the Secretariat Officers and Employees Unity Forum, announced the fresh programme from a protest rally on the Secretariat premises on Sunday. The 2-hour work abstention will start at 11am. On June 19, secretariat employees staged a similar protest expressing concern over the ordinance, which they said was drafted without consulting stakeholders and could pave the way for arbitrary decisions on employment status and disciplinary action. The Unity Forum said that if their demands are not met, they will announce stronger protest programmes in the coming days. Fire at Bangladesh Secretariat sparks concerns of sabotage The draft of the ‘controversial’ ordinance was approved at a meeting of the Advisory Council on May 22. It includes provisions allowing dismissal of government employees for four types of disciplinary offences without a formal departmental inquiry, requiring only a show-cause notice. The ordinance was promulgated on May 25, sparking widespread backlash among public servants. Government employees have condemned the ordinance as regressive and a ‘black law’. Since May 24, they have been staging protest marches, work abstentions, and sit-ins within the Secretariat. Memorandums have also been submitted to several advisers demanding its repeal.

Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka is witnessing a sharp increase in incidents of car part theft, with organised gangs reportedly targeting both parked and moving vehicles across various parts of the city, including residential areas and commercial zones. In recent years, the trend of stealing parts from moving vehicles has also become alarmingly common in Dhaka, particularly during traffic jams and signal halts. This petty yet dangerous crime is catching commuters off guard and raising deeper concerns about urban safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement. Police and residents report that car batteries, side mirrors, wheels, headlights, and fog lamps are among the most frequently stolen parts. Thieves are known to operate even in moderately busy areas under the watch of surveillance systems—often in broad daylight. Law enforcement officials estimate that more than 50 organised groups are involved in stealing and reselling car parts. Most of the stolen items reportedly end up in second-hand markets in places such as Dholaikhal and Bangshal, where they are sold to workshops and garages—often without any documentation. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) acknowledged the rising trend and said they have stepped up surveillance, urging car owners to take precautions and report incidents promptly. Victims and motorists have increasingly turned to social media to vent their frustration, highlighting the frequency of such thefts and what many see as a lack of meaningful follow-up by authorities. In several cases, complainants said police reports were filed but no further action followed. Car owners have been advised by police to install battery locks, wheel nut locks, GPS trackers and alarm systems, and to avoid parking in poorly lit or unsecured areas. The DMP says it has launched awareness campaigns and targeted operations to identify and arrest members of these organised syndicates. Hajiganj Municipality: A town suffocated by its own refuse This spike in theft comes amid a broader rise in both petty and organised crime in the capital, prompting renewed calls for better community policing and expanded surveillance infrastructure. A senior officer from the Detective Branch (DB) of DMP, speaking on condition of anonymity, said nearly 200 complaints of car-part theft were received over the past three months. “These are not isolated incidents,” the officer said. “We suspect at least 40 to 50 organised groups are operating across Dhaka. They use motorcycles or small cars to scout for targets, and some even pose as mechanics or vendors to avoid suspicion," he said. Residents of Dhanmondi, Uttara, Mohammadpur and Mirpur have all reported incidents in recent weeks. CCTV footage from some areas has shown thieves dismantling parts within minutes. Victims voice frustration Many car owners have expressed disappointment over what they describe as a “casual attitude” by police in responding to reports. “It happened in front of my apartment at 8:30 am. The side mirrors were gone by the time I came out,” said Mohammad Faisal, a resident of Bashundhara R/A. “I filed a complaint at the local police station, but nothing happened. They didn’t even ask for CCTV footage," he said. Others spoke of repeated financial loss. “A set of original fog lamps for my car costs over Tk 15,000. This is the second time I’m replacing them in six months,” said Sharmeen Haque, a schoolteacher living in Gulshan. The DMP has urged the public to report such incidents either to the national emergency helpline 999 or via its official complaint portal. Gulistan traffic jam: A hotspot for car part thefts Commuters passing through the busy Gulistan area say they are increasingly falling victim to car part theft, especially during heavy traffic congestion and signal stops. Reports have emerged of valuable exterior components such as side mirrors, windshield wipers, and emblems being snatched in daylight, particularly in areas around Bangabandhu National Stadium, Golap Shah Mazar, Zero Point and the entrances to the underground market. Witnesses say the perpetrators, often in pairs or small groups, take advantage of stationary vehicles to swiftly remove parts and disappear into the crowds. “I was waiting for the signal to turn green near Golap Shah Mazar when two boys approached pretending to sell tissues. One distracted me while the other snatched the left side mirror and ran,” said Sabuj Khan, an employee at a private company. “I only realised the mirror was missing after reaching the office," he said. Law enforcement agencies have acknowledged these thefts and said measures are being taken to increase patrols and improve police response. Transport associations and experts say stolen parts are often resold within hours in nearby used-parts markets, making recovery difficult. Due to the limited presence of CCTV and the chaotic nature of traffic areas, police have recommended vehicle owners install dash cameras and use anti-theft locks for easily removable parts. “I was stuck near the Golap Shah Mazar light for barely two minutes. When I reached my office, I saw the entire mirror on the left side was gone,” said Saidul Islam, a private bank employee. While police stations in Shahbagh and Paltan receive regular complaints, enforcement remains a challenge due to crowding and logistical limitations. After years of ambitious promises and delays, Elon Musk’s long-touted vision of Tesla “robotaxis” is finally hitting the road — albeit modestly — with a small pilot program launched in Austin, Texas, on Sunday. Tesla began testing 10 to 12 self-driving taxis in a limited, geofenced area of Austin, with each ride costing a flat fee of \$4.20. The vehicles are being remotely monitored and have a person in the passenger seat to intervene if needed, as reported by AP.  Musk took to X to share the news, writing, “The @Tesla\_AI robotaxi launch begins in Austin this afternoon with customers paying a \$4.20 flat fee!” The test run marks a significant moment for Tesla, especially after repeated delays since Musk first promised autonomous taxis back in 2019. At the time, he said they would be operational “next year,” a promise he repeated annually without fulfillment. Most recently, in early 2023, Musk claimed Tesla would have “over a million robotaxis” on the road by 2024. While only a dozen vehicles are active now, Musk has vowed rapid expansion of the service, predicting “hundreds of thousands if not a million vehicles next year.” However, industry analysts remain skeptical. “How quickly can he expand the fleet?” asked Garrett Nelson, an analyst at CFRA. “We're talking maybe a dozen vehicles initially. Iran likely filled in tunnels at some of its nuclear facilities ahead of the recent U.S. strikes, according to a Washington-based nuclear nonproliferation group. The Institute for Science and International Security said satellite images taken by Airbus on Friday showed trucks dumping soil into tunnels at Iran’s nuclear site in Isfahan, just days before the American attack early Sunday. The group believes the U.S. strikes likely targeted the tunnel entrances, reports AP. “At least three of the four tunnel entrances are collapsed,” it said. “The status of the fourth one is unclear.” Iran is also believed to have filled in tunnels at its underground Fordo enrichment facility prior to the American strikes, which may have been an effort to shield the sites from potential damage. The group further stated that the U.S. cruise missile strike at the Isfahan site likely destroyed Iran’s uranium conversion facility. That facility processes natural uranium into uranium hexafluoride, a material Iran uses in centrifuges to enrich uranium. Iran vows to continue US nuclear talks despite trump threats Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that the strikes inflicted significant damage on Iran’s nuclear program. “The biggest damage took place far below ground level. Bullseye!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, describing the impact as “monumental damage.” However, U.S. defense officials have said an assessment is still underway to determine the full extent of the damage. Iran has yet to disclose details of the damage caused by the strikes. Global oil prices climbed sharply in early trading today as US air strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities fuelled fears of potential disruptions to energy supplies. Both Brent crude and US benchmark WTI rose over four percent at the start of trading, reaching their highest levels since January, AFP reported. However, those gains moderated later, with Brent up 2.2 percent at $79.20 per barrel and WTI 2.1 percent higher at $75.98 around 00:30 GMT. Once buoyed by a promising harvest, onion farmers in Faridpur—Bangladesh's second-largest onion-producing district—now face financial losses due to a decline in market prices. On Sunday morning, onions were selling for just Tk 1,500 to Tk 1,700 per maund, depending on the variety, at the bustling Ttenthenia market in Saltha upazila.  Similar price levels were observed in other markets in Faridpur town and nearby areas. Farmers say they could only break even if prices reached Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,200 per maund.  With prices falling short, many are unable to recover even their basic production costs. Every market day, starting before dawn, farmers from surrounding villages arrive at Ttenthenia—some hauling sacks of onions on their shoulders, others using vans, three-wheelers, or autos—to sell their produce. Alongside local traders, wholesalers from across the country frequent the market. Local farmers like Nizam Uddin Sheikh, Alamgir Molla, Ibrahim Matubbor, and Nishar Uddin Khan shared that they had initially stored their onions, anticipating higher prices later in the season. “But now the prices are barely enough to cover our costs,” said Nishar Uddin, lamenting that the delay in selling has also led to spoilage and quality degradation. Shaheduzzaman, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Faridpur, noted that the district produces three key varieties of onions: winter-season 'Murikata', 'Hali', and 'Dana'. “Of these, ‘Hali’ onions make up the largest share. This season, onions were cultivated on 38,000 hectares of land in Faridpur, and the yield has been robust,” he said. Traders believe the recent price drop is largely due to a post-Eid surge in supply, overwhelming the market and pushing rates down. Despite being one of the largest onion trading centers in Faridpur, Ttenthenia’s current market dynamics have left local farmers disheartened, as their hard-earned harvests yield more disappointment than dividends.

Several areas in Dhaka city experienced power outages on Saturday night following an electrical malfunction at a Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) substation in Rampura. The disruption began around 10 pm, according to Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) spokesperson Shamim Hasan. He said the malfunction primarily affected areas under the Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), while zones served by the Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) remained mostly unaffected. As a result, electricity supply was cut off in Rampura, Hatirjheel, Farmgate, Banani and Gulshan. PGCB personnel are working to resolve the issue, the spokesperson said. When asked about the estimated restoration time, he said, “It could take half an hour to an hour, or possibly longer.” “Arrangements will be made to restore power, even if it requires bypassing the affected area,” he added.

A suicide bomber in Syria on Sunday detonated himself inside a church filled with people, killing at least nine, Syrian state media reported. The explosion in Dweil’a in the outskirts of Damascus took place as people were praying inside the Mar Elias Church. SANA, citing the Health Ministry said that at least 15 others were wounded. Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says there were 30 people wounded and killed, but did not give exact numbers. Some local media reported that children were among the casualties. The attack was the first of its kind in Syria in years, and comes as Damascus under its de facto Islamist rule is trying to win the support of minorities. As President Ahmad al-Sharaa struggles to exert authority across the country, there have been concerns about the presence of sleeper cells of extremist groups in the war-torn country. No group immediately claimed responsibility Sunday, but the Syrian Interior Ministry said an extremist from the Islamic State group entered the church, fired at the people there before detonating himself with an explosives vest, echoing some witness testimonies. A witness who identified himself as Rawad told The Associated Press he saw the attacker who was accompanied by two others who fled as he was driving near the church. “He was shooting at the church … he then went inside the church and blew himself up,” he said. Syrian Information Minister Hamza Mostafa condemned the attack, calling it a terrorist attack. “This cowardly act goes against the civic values that brings us together,” he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “We will to back down from our commitment to equal citizenship … and we also affirm the state’s pledge to exert all its efforts to combat criminal organizations and to protect society from all attacks threatening its safety.” Security forces and first-responders rushed to the church. Panicked survivors wailed, as one lady fell to her knees and burst into tears. A photo circulated by Syrian state media SANA showed the church's pews covered in debris and blood.  

For many people, summer is their favorite season, a time for cookouts, beach trips and other outdoor activities. However, summer also brings the risk of dangerously high temperatures and humidity. In the U.S., hundreds of people working or playing outside – even those who seem healthy – succumb to heat-related illnesses each year. Older adults and people in areas that historically haven’t needed air conditioning tend to see the highest rates of illnesses during heat waves, as Chicago saw in 1995 when at least 700 people died in a heat wave. Even in places where heat is recognized as a dangerous health threat, people can be caught off guard as the thermometer creeps higher, on average, each year. In some cases, dangerous heat can arise quickly. In 2021, a young family died of heat stroke on a California trail after setting out for a hike when temperatures were still in the 70s Fahrenheit (low to mid 20s Celsius). I study health risks in a warming climate as a professor of public health, and I’ve seen heat become a growing concern. Here are some of the key warning signs to watch for when temperatures rise – and ways to keep cool when the heat and humidity get too high. Signs of heat-related illness to watch for Heat-related illnesses occur across a spectrum, and mild heat stress can quickly progress to life-threatening heat stroke if a person is exposed to dangerous conditions for too long. Mild forms of heat-related illness include heat cramps and heat rash, both of which can be caused by extensive sweating during hot conditions. Cooling the body and drinking cool fluids can help. When heat-related illnesses progress into heat exhaustion, the situation is more serious. Heat exhaustion includes symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, excessive sweating, feeling weak, thirst and getting a headache. Heat exhaustion is a signal that the body is losing its ability to maintain a stable core temperature. Immediate action such as moving to a cool, ideally air-conditioned space, drinking liquids, loosening clothes and applying wet cloths are some of the recommended steps that can help keep heat exhaustion from progressing to the most dangerous form of heat-related illness, heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. At this point, the body can no longer maintain a stable core temperature. A body with heat stroke can reach 106 degrees Fahrenheit or higher rapidly, and that heat can quickly damage the brain, heart and kidneys. Typically, someone suffering heat stroke has exhausted their reserves of sweat and salt to stay cool, so sweating eventually stops during heat stroke. Their cognitive ability fails, and they cannot remove themselves from danger. Heat stroke can cause seizures or put someone into a coma as their core temperature rises. If the condition is not treated immediately, and the core temperature continues to rise, heat stroke becomes fatal. Because heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, addressing heat-related illnesses before they progress is vital. How to tell when the heat is too high Heat risk isn’t just about temperature – humidity also increases the risk of heat-related illnesses because it affects how well sweating will cool the human body when it gets hot. Instead of just looking at temperature when planning outdoor activities, check the heat index, which accounts for heat illness risk associated with temperature and relative humidity. It doesn’t take very high temperatures or very high humidity for the heat index to enter dangerous territory. However, the heat index is still a conservative measure of the impact of heat on humans, particularly for outdoor workers and athletes at summer practices. This is because temperature measurements used in weather forecasting are taken in the shade and are not exposed to direct sunlight. If someone is outside and exposed to the direct sun, the actual heat index can be as much as 15 F higher than the heat index chart indicates. A more sophisticated measurement of heat effects on human health is what’s known as the wet-bulb globe temperature, which takes into account other variables, such as wind speed and cloud cover. Neither takes into account a person’s physical exertion, which also raises their body temperature, whether working at a construction site or playing soccer. Tips for staying safe in a heat wave How can you stay cool when heat waves set in? The answer depends in part on where you are, but the main points are the same: Avoid strenuous outdoor activities in high temperatures if possible. If you start to feel symptoms of heat-related illnesses, drink fluids that will hydrate you. Find shade, rest, and use cool, damp cloths to lower your body temperature. If you see signs of heat stroke in someone else, call for medical help. Be careful with fans. Fans can be useful if the temperature isn’t too high because they wick sweat away from the body and induce evaporative cooling. But at very high temperatures, they can accelerate heat buildup in the body and lead to dangerous conditions. If indoor temperatures reaches 95 degrees or higher, using fans can actually be dangerous and raise the risk of heat-related illnesses. Find a cooling center, library or community center where you can get inside and rest in an air-conditioned space in the hottest hours. In places such as Phoenix, where high temperatures are a regular hazard, cooling centers are typically opened in summer. Northern cities are also opening cooling centers as heat waves occur there more frequently than they did in the past. Urban areas with a lot of pavement and buildings – known as heat islands – can have temperatures well above the city’s average. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drink plenty of fluids, and don’t forget about the importance of electrolytes. Heat-related dehydration can occur when people sweat excessively, losing water and necessary salts from the body. Some sports drinks or rehydration fluids restore electrolytes and hydration levels. Older adults and people with disabilities often face higher risks from heat waves, particularly if they can’t easily move to a cooler environment. Communities and neighbors can help protect vulnerable populations by providing cooling centers and bottled water and making regular wellness checks during high heat. Summer can be a season of fun. Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, now in Istanbul, on sought intensified humanitarian contributions for Rohingyas, stressing that the pressure on Bangladesh’s economy, environment and local communities is unsustainable. "We are facing mounting humanitarian, developmental and security-related challenges," he said while speaking at the OIC Ad Hoc Ministerial Committee on Accountability for Human Rights Violations against the Rohingyas. Bangladesh has shown "extraordinary compassion and responsibility" by sheltering over 1.3 million forcibly displaced Rohingyas despite experiencing a snowballing of the crises. Since November 2023, over 118,000 more Rohingyas have arrived due to renewed violence and instability. A “high-level conference on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar” will be organised on 30 September 2025 in New York on the sidelines of UNGA.  "We expect high-level participations from the OIC countries," Adviser Hossain said. He said OIC may engage the member states to provide required financial support to run case at ICJ by the Gambia. Now the Gambia will need full solidarity, support and cooperation. Dhaka voices deep concern over attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities "I would like to request our brothers to extend more financial support to the OIC fund for this case," Hossain said, adding that ensuring justice will boost confidence of the Rohingyas to return to Myanmar. For the Rohingya community, he said, Bangladesh has done its part - perhaps more than its share. "We now look to the OIC and the international community to uphold their moral and legal responsibilities. Our call today is not just for charity, but also for justice, solidarity, and shared accountability. Let us reaffirm, as one Ummah, that the Rohingyas will not be forgotten," said the Adviser. Recently, the situation in Rakhine has undergone dramatic changes. The Arakan Army now controls the 271-km Bangladesh-Myanmar Border and 14 of Rakhine’s 17 townships. As of May 2025, the number of reported internally displacement persons in Rakhine is around 587,000 (Five hundred and Eighty-Seven Thousand). "Due to the ongoing conflict, another 1,18,000 Myanmar nationals have fled to Bangladesh recently. All these influxes are further straining Bangladesh’s limited resources," Hossain said. The world is now going through multiple conflict situations. First batch of Bangladeshis likely to return home from Iran next week "The humanitarian needs are rising dramatically in different corners. The assistance for Rohingyas staying in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char has also been affected due to inadequate funding," he said. There is an alarming downward trend of humanitarian support for Rohingyas in Bangladesh. Only 68% of the UN estimated required fund for 2024 has been received last year. The 2025-26 JRP was launched with a pledged amount of USD 934.5 million for 1.48 million people. Due to fund shortage Unicef has closed learning facilities since 3rd of June. Moreover, WFP has cut the food ration twice. However, it will decline further if funds are not available by September. "We appreciate the humanitarian support provided by the OIC member States," said Adviser Hossain.  At this juncture of a critical time, he said they are witnessing with great sorrow the increasing victimization of Muslims across the world. The Rohingya tragedy is not an isolated episode - it is part of a broader pattern of injustice against Muslim populations, said the Adviser. He called upon the OIC to assume a more assertive and coordinated role. This includes sustaining international legal action, enhancing advocacy, mobilizing humanitarian resources, and working with global actors to facilitate durable repatriation of the Rohingyas with rights, protection, and dignity, Hossain said. "Malaysia is now the chair of Asean," he said, adding that OIC may engage this platform to urge Asean to put pressure on Myanmar to stop its atrocities against the Rohingyas and ensure a conducive environment for the repatriation from Bangladesh. The systematic discrimination and violence on the Rohingya community, native to Myanmar’s Rakhine State, reached its peak in 2017 forced them to flee across the border into Bangladesh, in what the United Nations rightly called a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing.”

A nine-member high-level delegation of the BNP, led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, left Dhaka for China on Sunday night on a five-day visit at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC). BNP vows to rebuild education, curb brain drain Yunus said the CPC has given a formal invitation for the visit, which is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations and sharing party-level experiences. Earlier, the delegation visited the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka on Thursday evening at the invitation of China’s acting ambassador to Dhaka ahead of the trip. Party insiders said the visit underscores BNP’s intention to deepen relations with China, which remains a key development partner for Bangladesh. They believe the visit may play a crucial role in bolstering diplomatic engagement with Beijing, especially in the context of a possible future political transition in Bangladesh. The BNP is increasingly viewed by stakeholders as a 'government in waiting', given the present political context of Bangladesh. That wait is expected to last till the next election. BNP leaders also view the trip as part of a broader effort by the Chinese government to build and maintain relationships across the political spectrum in Bangladesh. According to AP, the coordinated messaging by his vice president, Pentagon chief, top military adviser and secretary of state suggested a confidence that any fallout from the attack would be manageable and that Iran’s lack of military capabilities would ultimately force it back to the bargaining table. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said at a news conference that America “does not seek war” with Iran while Vice President JD Vance said the strikes have given Tehran the possibility of returning to negotiate with Washington. “Operation Midnight Hammer, involved decoys and deception, and met with no Iranian resistance, according to Hegseth and Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “This mission was not and has not been about regime change,” Hegseth added. Caine said the goal of the operation — destroying nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan — had been achieved. “Final battle damage will take some time, but initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction,” Caine said. Bangladesh has received a record-high inward remittance of $29.5 billion so far in the current fiscal year (2024–25), marking the highest amount ever recorded in a single fiscal year. According to the Bangladesh Bank, from July 1, 2024, to June 21, 2025, the expatriates sent $29.5 billion remittance. In FY2023–24, inward remittance grew by 26.7 percent to reach $23.28 billion. The expatriates sent $1.98 billion remittance in 21 days of the current month --June. Earlier this month, Central bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur expressed satisfaction over the flow of remittance earning. The Iranian Parliament has voted in support of closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil transit routes, following US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, according to media reports. While the vote reflects strong parliamentary sentiment, the final decision rests with the country’s Supreme National Security Council and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The parliamentary move is intended to advise the country’s top leadership of available options in response to the attacks. "The Parliament has reached the conclusion that the Strait of Hormuz should be closed, but the final decision in this regard lies with the Supreme National Security Council," Revolutionary Guards Commander Ismail Kowsari, a member of the National Security Commission of the Parliament, said on Sunday, according to Al Arabiya and the Jerusalem Post. Gulf states on high alert following US strikes on Iran The vote followed the U.S. military’s execution of Operation Midnight Hammer on Saturday, during which seven B2 stealth bombers entered Iranian airspace and dropped 14 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs on two of Iran’s nuclear sites, including the heavily fortified Fordow facility. A third site was targeted with submarine-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles. US President Donald Trump said the targeted sites had been "obliterated" in the air raid, which involved a total of 125 aircraft and was completed in 25 minutes. Highlighting the importance of reforms in the judiciary, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Sunday said these reforms, if fully implemented, will mark a ‘new dawn’ for Bangladesh, fulfilling the aspirations for which so many have sacrificed. “Let us not dwell on the past obstacles. Instead, let us move forward, act decisively and realise the dreams of our martyrs by building a society of equality, dignity and liberty,” he said, adding that ensuring an independent and efficient Judiciary will significantly advance these pursuits. The Chief Adviser was speaking as the chief guest at a national seminar on ‘Judicial, Independence and Efficiency’ with Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed in the chair.  In order to safeguard the district judiciary from executive and political influence, Prof Yunus said steps have been taken to formulate rules for judicial transfers. “The creation of a separate secretariat is a proposal that we cannot walk away from. A separate Secretariat would grant the judiciary the structural autonomy to adjudicate without external pressure,” he said. Prof Yunus said it is also commendable that as part of the reforms, the Supreme Judicial Council has been made fully operational, ensuring judicial accountability and independence. Prof Yunus said this seminar is particularly timely and significant as it has been convened during a pivotal period of reform of Bangladesh. “Every nation awaits a moment of transformation, an opportunity to mark a new beginning. This is our moment,” he said, adding that this juncture does hold the key to a nation's future in human history and such opportunities are rare. He said they have a long road ahead to fulfill the promises of the July uprising, and they bear an ingrained responsibility to honor this sacred memory of those who laid down their lives in the July uprising. The Chief Adviser laid emphasis on ensuring justice for the heinous crimes against humanity committed during the months of July and August of 2024. “Today, the nation stands united in its determination to hold the perpetrators accountable.” He said they aim to create a just society where liberty, equality and dignity would guide all their actions. The Chief Adviser said in considering reform initiatives, they must assess the effectiveness and credibility of various institutions and structures in shaping Bangladesh's future. At least 147 new political parties, including National Citizen Party-NCP, applied seeking registration with the Election Commission within the extended deadline that expired on Sunday. Of them, 82 political parties that applied during the extended time since April 20 last, and the rest 65 parties applied before April 20 after EC on March 10 invited applications from new political parties. With the 82 parties, a total of 147 parties sought to be registered with the Election Commission this time, said EC officials. NCP was among many political parties that applied for the registration on the last day. An NCP delegation, led by its member secretary Member Secretary Akhter Hossain, went to Nirbachan Bhaban at 4pm and submitted their application seeking it to be registered with the commission. The new party also submitted the necessary papers as documents in support of their application. Later, NCP convener Nahid Islam went to the EC and met Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin. “We on behalf of NCP have submitted the application to the Election Commission fulfilling all registration related conditions,” said Nahid Islam while talking to reporters after the meeting. Noting that they fulfilled the conditions set by the commission, he said NCP formed its 105 upazila-level and 25 district-level committees and submitted all the documents to the EC. “We are hopeful that the National Citizen Party-NCP will get its registration as soon as possible," said the party chief. He said they have applied for one of the three symbols – Water Lily, Pen or Mobile Phone – to be used as party symbol. NCP submits applications seeking registration with EC “Our first choice is Water Lily. We hope that NCP will get Water Lily as a symbol of the people and the mass uprising and the rural Bengal,” he said. In reply to a question how a national emblem like Water Lily could be allotted to a political party, Nahid Islam said the reviewed EC laws and rules and there is no such bar in the laws. Noting that the national fruit ‘Jackfruit’ is the symbol of a political party, he said, “In that case, we did not see any problem, so we applied for it (Water Lily)." Nahid also argued that the national emblem is not just the water lily.  “Water lily, sheaf of paddy and stars – all are part of the national emblem,” he added. Earlier, NCP member secretary Akhter Hossain said they submitted the application fulfilling all registration related conditions in line with the RPO. NCP chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary expressed optimism that their party would be able to secure 300 parliamentary seats out of the 400 ones recommended by the Constitutional Reform or National Consensus Commission in the future. “In this parliament, out of the 400 seats of the Reform or Consensus Commission in the future, the NCP will gain 300 seats in the house. And this time the NCP will form a national government in the parliament,” he said. Partwary said the Water Lily symbol will win the hearts of the people in the next parliamentary election. “A new government will be formed under the NCP’s leadership,” he went on. Replying to a question, NCP wants reconstitution of the Election Commission in a bid to strengthen it. “The Election Commission is a constitutional institution. This constitutional institution has been destroyed in the last 15 years. But the persons who are in the constitutional institution need to be restructured (changed), the rules and regulations need to be changed, said Patwary. The NCP delegation members also include its chief organiser (southern region) Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (northern region) Sarjis Alam and senior joint convener Samantha Sharmin. JPB seeks ‘elephant’ as symbol Janata Party Bangladesh (JPB) applied for registration with a request to use the elephant as its electoral symbol. Submitting the application at Nirbachan Bhaban, JPB Secretary General Shawkat Mahmud said, “We’ve filed the application for political party registration. The current registration rules are difficult to comply with. Although the Electoral Reform Commission has proposed changes, those haven’t been implemented yet. Even so, we’ve submitted our application under the existing rules and expect to be registered.” He said JPB supports reforms and would cooperate with the EC if rule changes are implemented. Janatar Dal wants ‘key’ as symbol Another applicant, Janatar Dal, filed its application requesting the key as its symbol. Jannatar Dal convener Brig Gen (retd) Shamim Kamal and member secretary Azam Khan submitted the application. “We’ve fulfilled all registration conditions and formed district and upazila committees as required by the law. The rest now depends on the Commission,” Shamim Kamal told reporters after filing their application. NDP seeks ‘Tiger’ symbol National Democratic Party (NDP), which once was led by late BNP leader Salahuddin Kader Chowdhury, applied for registration and sought ‘Tiger’ as its electoral symbol, said NDP president Kazi Abu Taher. On March 10, the EC invited applications from new political parties seeking registration by 20 April. A total of 65 parties applied within the deadline. The commission later extended the deadline until June 22. New political parties are registered under Article 90A of the Representation of the People Order, 1972. If a party is registered with the EC, it can contest the national election with its own electoral symbol. Now, 50 parties are registered with the EC. The registration of Bangladesh Awami League remains suspended, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is set to regain its registration following a court order.

Noted economist and Executive Chairman of Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC)  Hossain Zillur Rahman on Sunday said the interim government has five major economic challenges to face in the coming days. These challenges are—turning education as a tool to create human resources, remove investment stagnation, youth employment, address poverty and equity and address corruption, he said. He said that without addressing these issues the country might not advance with desired speed. He also said that speed to address these issues is another critical challenge for the government. “We are moving ahead, no one is complaining about it, but the main issue is how fast we are moving ahead, speed is the matter here,” he said. He said this while addressing the CPD Budget Dialogue 2025: An analysis of the National Budget for FY 2025-26 at a city hotel. Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Distinguished Fellow Mustafizur Rahman chaired the programme where Executive Director of CPD Fahmida Khatun presented the keynote presentation. Hossain Zillur,  the former adviser to the caretaker government, said that at present the education of the country is not transforming humans in to human resources. “As a whole, we cannot prioritise the education sector, we cannot form an education commission,” he said. Regarding the stagnant investment scenario, he mentioned that only the Finance Adviser alone can not do anything about it. “We have to advance through whole of approach basis,” he added. Pointing to the culture of lodging wholesale cases, he said that this has put the entire business world in to an uncertainty. “We have put the society under a blanket of suspicion rather focusing on strictly those who need to be punished,” he said. Proposed budget 'traditional', lacking major reform approaches: Seminar He said that to remove the investment stagnation, the finance ministry is not the only actor. “It has to be a whole of government approach,” he added. The PPRC executive chairman said that the government should bring the youth employment in the focus. He said that there are 22 lakh youths adding in the job market each year. “We have to think about them, not only for this year, but also for the next years,” he said. He also said that there should be an effective strategy for this as the country needs a breakthrough. For addressing the poverty and equity issue, he said that the country must need for new growth challenge and it needs new growth drivers. The economist said that there is no doubt that the society has corrupt people, but it has also hard working and honest people and their number is higher in the society. He termed institutional inefficiency as part of the corruption as it initiate hassles for the people of the country.

Masudul Hoque, special correspondent of United News of Bangladesh (UNB), has been elected president of the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF). Mohammad Ubaydullah (Badal) of daily Kaler Kantho has been elected general secretary. The election to form the executive committee for the 2025-2026 term was held on Sunday at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital. Chief Election Commissioner and Jatiya Press Club President Hasan Hafiz announced the results. Former Jatiya Press Club president and editor of Daily Desh Rupantor Kamal Uddin Sabuj and former general secretary of the club and executive editor of daily Amar Desh Syed Abdal Ahmad served as election commissioners. In the outgoing committee, Mahtab was president while Masudul served as general secretary. Out of 156 registered BSRF voters, 151 cast their ballots. Four ballots were declared invalid due to errors.

Police detained former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda from his residence in the capital’s Uttara area on Sunday evening. The detention came just hours after a case was filed by the BNP at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Sunday morning, accusing 24  people, including former Chief Election Commissioners, Election Commissioners and other officials involved in conducting the 10th, 11th and 12th national elections, of irregularities and biased conduct. Deputy Commissioner (Uttara Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Hafizur Rahman confirmed the detention, saying that based on secret information, a team from Uttara West Police Station conducted a raid on a house in Uttara Sector-5 around 7:30 pm and detained KM Nurul Huda. "For security reasons, he was handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) office on Minto Road shortly after he was detained," the DC said. As Huda is an accused in the case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, he is likely to be shown arrested in connection with that case, he added. Rokeya University teacher Mahamud gets bail; OC transferred Earlier in the day, a four-member BNP delegation led by National Executive Committee member Salahuddin Khan filed the case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The complaint named 24 people, including former CECs Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda and Kazi Habibul Awal, along with several unidentified persons. BNP alleges that the 2014, 2018, and 2024 general elections were manipulated and held in a partisan manner, despite repeated calls for a non-partisan caretaker government and the deployment of army personnel with magistracy powers during polling. Talking to reporters, Salahuddin Khan said, “Despite widespread complaints during those elections, the then CECs failed to take any corrective measures. We hope the current Election Commission will investigate and take action.” The 10th parliamentary election in January 2014 saw 153 Awami League candidates elected unopposed after the BNP and other opposition parties boycotted the polls. That election was held under the leadership of CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad. Ex-ministers Anisul, Qamrul, 2 others shown arrested in murder cases In the 11th parliamentary election of December 2018, overseen by CEC KM Nurul Huda, the BNP alleged that ballots were stuffed the night before voting. The 12th election in 2024, conducted under CEC Kazi Habibul Awal, was dismissed by the BNP as a “dummy election,” as the party chose not to participate. Earlier this month, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus directed the authorities to form a committee to investigate the roles of those involved in conducting the three controversial elections.

Bangladesh's food production faces a significant threat, and food security is increasingly at risk as agricultural land has been eroded by 3.75 percent over the past eight years, driven by rapid urbanisation across the country. This alarming finding was revealed in a comprehensive survey report by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), conducted under its 'Strengthening Environment, Climate Change and Disaster Statistics (ECDS)' project. The survey, covering the period from 2015 to 2023, shed light on critical environmental and climate issues for the first time in such detail in Bangladesh. The report was officially unveiled on Sunday, at a dissemination seminar held at the BBS Auditorium, marking a significant step in the country's commitment to environmental statistics. Beyond the decline in agricultural land, the survey presented a range of crucial climate-related data. It found that natural forest cover decreased by 5.41 percent during the same eight-year period, although this was partially offset by a substantial 27.36 percent increase in planted forests (social plantations). The extensive survey encompassed various critical areas, including a household-based environmental survey for 2024, water use information, materials consumed in households, land accounts, forest and ecosystem accounts, and detailed analyses of land cover and land use status. It also provided insights into waste management practices in both urban and rural areas, e-waste, solid waste management, and the alarming status of polluting water bodies. Speaking at the seminar and report publication ceremony, Aleya Akter, secretary of the Statistics and Information Division, Ministry of Planning, graced the event as the chief guest. AK Enamul Haque, director general of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), was present as a special guest, while Muhammed Mizanur Rahman, Director General of BBS, presided over the event.  PKSF unveils five-year plan for inclusive growth Mohammad Saddam Hossain Khan, project director of the ECDS project, presented the key findings of the survey during the seminar. He highlighted that the primary objective of the ECDS project is to establish a systematic framework for environmental statistics within Bangladesh by producing comprehensive data related to the environment, natural resources, biodiversity, climate change, and disaster risk. Khan further emphasised that a major aim of the project is to conduct climate change and natural disaster-related surveys to monitor the impacts of these events. Another core objective, he added, is to develop physical flow natural resource accounts, including forest, land, and ecosystem accounts, as well as water accounts, aligned with the UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA). The seminar saw the unveiling of seven detailed survey reports under the ECDS project. These include: the Household Based Environmental Survey (HBES) 2024; Material Footprint (MF) and Domestic Material Consumption (DMC); Physical Flow Water Accounts for Bangladesh; Development of Time Series Environmental Spreadsheets for International Reporting following the Global Environmental Template developed by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD); Compilation of the Bangladesh Environmental Statistics 2024; Natural Resource Accounts (Land); and Natural Resource Account (Forest and Ecosystem). The findings underscore an urgent need for strategic planning to mitigate the impact of land erosion and rapid urbanization on Bangladesh's vital agricultural sector and overall environmental health.

The Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) has unveiled a draft Strategic Plan (2025-2030), aimed at accelerating inclusive growth in Bangladesh. The plan, presented at a meeting held at the PKSF Bhaban in Agargaon on Saturday, outlines a comprehensive strategy to address the changing socio-economic landscape, emerging technologies, and evolving dimensions of poverty. PKSF Chairman Zakir Ahmed Khan presided over the meeting, attended by members of the General and Governing Bodies, while Managing Director Md Fazlul Kader delivered the welcome remarks. According to a press release, PKSF has consistently designed and implemented need-based programmes since its inception, adapting its initiatives to meet the growing and shifting demands of disadvantaged communities. The organisation’s responsiveness and results-driven approach have earned it national and international recognition. However, the current context, marked by rapid socio-economic and technological shifts, calls for a recalibration of its operational framework. Proposed budget 'traditional', lacking major reform approaches: Seminar AKM Nuruzzaman, general manager of PKSF, presented the draft of the strategic plan, highlighting key pillars that will define the agency’s priorities for the next five years. Earlier, on June 17, a view-exchange meeting titled ‘PKSF Strategy 2030’ brought together noted economists and development experts at the same venue. The experts reviewed the draft plan and commended PKSF’s contributions, while offering suggestions to further strengthen the strategic roadmap. Speakers at both meetings expressed optimism that the finalised plan, once adopted, will reinforce PKSF’s role in promoting sustainable and inclusive development, especially for low-income and marginalized populations. The 'PKSF Strategic Plan (2025-2030)' is scheduled to be approved on June 29. In the 1980s, the government established a specialised institution for poverty alleviation through employment generation. After years-long discussions with development partners, different ministries and top development experts, the government finally decided to found Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF). This apex development organisation formally came into being on November 13, 1989. Ever since, PKSF has been working to fight poverty and improve lives across the country.

A Rangpur court on Sunday granted bail to Begum Rokeya University teacher Mahamudul Haque who was arrested in a murder case filed over the death of a grocer during the anti-discrimination student movement last year. Judge Mosammat Marzia Khatun of Rangpur Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the bail order after a hearing in the afternoon. Advocate Shamim Al Mamun, counsel for Mahamudul Haque, said, “The plaintiff in the case did not even know that Mahamud had been named as an accused. He doesn't even recognise him.” Advocate Mamun said they first sought bail from the Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court which heard their statement but deferred the hearing to June 24. "Then, in our pursuit of justice, we appealed to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, which granted the bail," he said. Prior to the bail hearing, a group of the university students gathered on the court premises, staged demonstrations demanding Mahamudul’s bail and exemption from what they termed a ‘conspiratorial’ case. Meanwhile, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hajirhat Police Station Abdul Al Mamun Shah, also the investigating officer of the case, was transferred. Earlier on June 19, police arrested Mahamudul Haque, an assistant professor at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the Begum Rokeya University, in connection with the case filed over the death of grocer Somes Uddin. Former state minister for planning Shamsul Alam arrested in Dhaka According to the case statement, on August 2, last year, police and Awami League activists threatened Somes at his shop in Radhakrishnapur area under Ward 12 of Rangpur city. He was injured in an attack by the activists of AL associate bodies. His family took him to Prime Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Ten months after the incident, Somes Uddin’s wife Amena Begum filed a case with Hajirhat Police Station on June 3 accusing 54 people, including ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina and minister Obaidul Quader. Mahamudul Haque was listed as the 54th accused and described as the Central Assistant Secretary for Information and Research of the Bangabandhu Parishad. Amena Begum and her son Ashiqur Rahman reportedly admitted that they filed the case under pressure from law enforcers and had no knowledge of who was named as accused. They said they only gave their signatures on papers.

Bangladesh reported five more deaths and 36 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours till Sunday morning, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). With the latest figures, the death toll has risen to 29,515 and total number of confirmed cases in the country has reached 20,51,978. 7 new COVID-19 cases reported in 24hrs A total of 621 samples were tested during the latest reporting period of 24 hours, resulting in a daily positivity rate of 5.80 per cent. The overall positivity rate stands at 13.05 per cent till now, while the fatality rate based on detected cases remains at 1.44 per cent.

One more death and 329 fresh cases were reported from dengue in 24 hour till Sunday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh 32 and number of confirmed cases to 7,758 this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). In recent fatalities, one was reported in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), DGHS said. Of the new cases, Barishal Division (out of city corporation) alone reported 136 new cases, Chattogram Division (outside city corporations) recorded 64 cases, Dhaka Division (outside city corporations) reported 38, while 43 cases were detected in Dhaka South City Corporation, 21 in Dhaka North City Corporation. Covid-19: One death, 26 new cases reported in 24hrs Khulna Division (out of city corporation) and Rajshahi Division (out of city corporation) reported 15 and 10 respectively while Mymensingh Division (out of city corporation) recorded two. Currently, 909 dengue patients are receiving treatment in hospitals across the country. Last year, dengue claimed the lives of 575 people. According to the DGHS, there were 101,214 dengue cases and 100,040 recoveries in the same year.

Bangladesh on Sunday expressed deep concern over the recent attacks targeting the nuclear facilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran. “Such developments risk further destabilising an already fragile regional situation and heighten the threat to international peace and security,” Spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Shah Asif Rahman told reporters at the ministry sharing Dhaka’s position. Bangladesh reiterated its longstanding position in favor of peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy. Bangladesh urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any actions that could escalate tensions in the region. Gulf nations, which host several US military installations, have heightened their security posture after US airstrikes on Iran, raising fears of a broader regional conflict. Bahrain has instructed 70 percent of its government workforce to operate remotely until further notice. “In light of recent developments in the regional security situation, we urge citizens and residents to use main roads only when necessary to maintain public safety and to allow the relevant authorities to use the roads efficiently,” Bahrain’s Interior Ministry posted on X. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday said no individual should serve as Prime Minister for more than 10 years in their lifetime. The party came up with the view during a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, following the National Consensus Commission’s talks under its second-round dialogue between political parties and the commission. Talking to reporters, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said, “We had proposed that no person should be allowed to hold the office of Prime Minister for more than 10 years in their lifetime. This proposal was made in the context of discussions around term limits and tenure.” Calling for a consensus on the issue, he said, “There is no need to debate terms and durations further. Except for three parties, everyone else agreed on this point.” “In other words,” he said, “a person can serve as Prime Minister a maximum of 10 years in total, regardless of the number of terms. I believe this reflects the aspiration of the nation. This should be the collective decision based on national consensus.” BNP files case against 3 ex-CECs, 21 others He said, “There are many precedents of such models in other countries. We believe this is essential for Bangladesh as well. We are close to reaching a consensus on this matter. Meanwhile, political parties have yet to find common ground on several issues in the National Consensus Commission’s ongoing dialogue. These include the distribution of seats in the proposed Upper House of Parliament and the formation of a National Constitutional Council (NCC), which has been proposed to bring balance to the powers of the Prime Minister. No consensus has been reached either on the method of electing the President or the election procedure for reserved seats for women. Disagreements among parties have also surfaced over the very definition of ‘consensus,’ prompting the Commission to consider issuing a clarification.

Amid growing tensions over Iran-Israel conflicts, the first batch of Bangladesh nationals, willing to return home from Iran, is expected to arrive in Dhaka next week. “The ministry is trying to ensure that the first group of those interested in repatriation reaches Bangladesh next week,” Spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Shah Asif Rahman told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday. Briefing reporters at the ministry, he said the repatriation process will be completed with the cooperation of Iran's neighboring countries. Asif said the government has started the necessary process to repatriate all Bangladeshi citizens living in Iran who wish to return to Bangladesh. The process of bringing back others to Bangladesh will be completed in phases, said the Spokesperson, adding that the ministry is in touch with the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment regarding repatriation. All Bangladeshi citizens interested in returning home have been requested to register with the Bangladesh Embassy in Tehran along with their names, addresses and other necessary information. Speakers at a discussion on Sunday stressed the need for a dedicated and inclusive road safety law to reduce preventable fatalities on the country’s roads. Citing WHO data Sharmeen Rahman, Road Safety Project Coordinator at Dhaka Ahsania Mission, said around 1.19 million people lose their lives in road crashes every year across the globe, with the vast majority of these fatalities occurring in low and middle-income countries including Bangladesh, Ninety two percent of global road crash deaths occur in developing countries with pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists accounting for over half of the victims, she said at the event titled “Road Safety Law is Essential for All” held at the organisation’s Health Sector office in the capital’s Shyamoli. Bangladesh ranks 106th out of 183 countries most affected by road crashes, she added. Only through strong laws and effective enforcement can we hope to bring down the number of road crashes, she said. Muklesur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Health Sector at Dhaka Ahsania Mission, reiterated the need for a comprehensive law aligned with five priority areas recommended by the United Nations: integrated transport and land-use planning, safer vehicles, improved road infrastructure, protection of road users, and effective post-crash care. He called on policymakers to act urgently to enact and implement a standalone Road Safety Law to safeguard lives on the roads.

China has strongly condemned the U.S. attacks on Iran and the bombing of nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson has said. The spokesperson made the remarks on Sunday when asked to comment on U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that the United States carried out strikes on three nuclear facilities in Iran, reports CGTN. The actions of the U.S. seriously violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law and have exacerbated tensions in the Middle East, the spokesperson said. China also called on the parties to the conflict—particularly Israel—to reach a ceasefire as soon as possible, ensure the safety of civilians, and engage in dialogue and negotiations. China stands ready to work with the international community to pool efforts, uphold justice, and work toward restoring peace and stability in the Middle East, the spokesperson added.

Noted economist Hossain Zillur Rahman on Sunday said time has come to become angry with the interim government. “I feel that time has come to become angry with the government and this will not be illogical, I will tell that anger will be holy one,” said the chairman of Power and Participation Research Centre, a think tank. He was speaking at the CPD Budget Dialogue 2025: An analysis of the National Budget for FY 2025-26 at a city hotel. Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Distinguished Fellow Mustafizur Rahman chaired the programme where Executive Director of CPD Fahmida Khatun presented the keynote presentation. Hossain Zillur, who was an adviser during the army-backed 1/11 government, said that this ‘holy anger’ is the anger that changes a society. “Time has come to be that angry,” he added. This is like listening without response, he said. Kumbhakarna is a prominent figure in the Hindu epic Ramayana, known as a powerful rakshasa (demon) and the younger brother of Ravana. He is characterised by his enormous size, immense strength, and a seemingly insatiable appetite and thirst, often depicted as sleeping for long periods.  Hossain Zillur  mentioned that the interim government is supposed to induce reforms in all major sectors like judiciary, education and health.  "But their entire reforms focused on the new constitution," he added. He claimed that the interim government is at present out of focus considering the reform issue.  

Terming the proposed national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year a traditional one, speakers at a seminar on Sunday said it offers little to be different from previous budgets, with no bold reforms or innovative approaches to address the country’s economic challenges. “If you say it generously then the budget is traditional, if you are not generous then it is prudent, and if you see it realistically then it is not impactful,” said Executive Chairman of Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman. He said this while speaking at the ‘CPD Budget Dialogue 2025: An analysis of the National Budget for FY 2025-26’ at a city hotel, with CPD Distinguished Fellow Professor Mustafizur Rahman in the chair. Terming the budget a plain one formulated by the non-partisan interim government, Co-secretary of international affairs for BNP and a former member of parliament Barrister Rumeen Farhana said if there was a political government in power it would have been different. "During a political government, there is planning, a clear roadmap and a defined tenure. Without these, trade, business and the economy cannot expect any good news," she said. Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) secretary general Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuaad mentioned that the interim government did not bother to have any consultation with the political parties while formulating the budget. Council of Advisers says ‘yes’ to budget, ‘no’ to black money “There are four economists in this small cabinet, this is unprecedented in the history of our political governments that they have presented such a badly drafted budget,” he said. Former MP and Jatiya Party (Ershad) leader Shamim Haider Patwari also said this budget is a very much traditional one. “This budget is not promising at all,” he added. Policy Exchange Bangladesh Chairman Dr Mashrur Riaz said there was no fundamental change in the budget. “Philosophically it is muted, structurally it is boring while not smart at all in its approach,” he said. Economist MM Akash termed the budget a very ordinary one. “Downsizing the budget, to me, is an advance march towards famine,” he said. Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) President Showkat Aziz criticised the interim government for presenting tempered information and data. He said factories are frequently laying off workers, but the government is paying no attention to it.He urged the government’s advisers to come out of their air-conditioned rooms and face the ground reality. Three people were killed and four others injured in two separate road accidents in Chattogram’s Mirsarai and Patiya upazilas on Sunday. Two people were killed as a drum truck collided with a moving container lorry on the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway near Thakur Dighi Bazar in Mirsarai, said Jorarganj Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Borhan Uddin. The deceased were identified as Faruk Hossain, 39, driver of the drum truck and son of Abdul Mannan from Bosu Mia Para of Matiranga in Khagrachhari and his assistant Robiul Islam, 35, son of Anwarul Islam from Chaktail area of Delduar in Tangail. SI Borhan said the drum truck was trying to overtake when it hit the rear of a container lorry at high speed. The front of the truck was severely mangled, killing both the driver and his assistant on the spot, he said. Their bodies were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy. EU engages with EC, civil society ahead of election Besides, a head-on collision between a Shyamoli Paribahan bus and a fish-laden truck left the truck driver dead and four others injured at Boiltoli Road area on the Patiya bypass. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Morshed, 24, the truck driver. Mohammad Jasim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Patiya Highway Police Station, said the Shyamoli bus was travelling from Chattogram to Bandarban when it collided with the truck. The injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment, he added.

Bangladesh strongly condemns 'unlawful, aggressive military attacks' on Iran by Israel Its partner ANFREL, powered by the EPD, hosted a three-day workshop on citizen election observation in Dhaka from June 18-20. The vital role of active and impartial citizen election observers in promoting transparency and accountability was underlined by all participants, said the EU Embassy. The National Citizen Party (NCP) submitted their applications to the Election Commission on Sunday, the last day for filing registration requests. JPB seeks ‘elephant’ as symbol Janata Party Bangladesh (JPB) applied for registration with a request to use the elephant as its electoral symbol. Submitting the application at Nirbachan Bhaban, JPB Secretary General Shawkat Mahmud said, “We’ve filed the application for political party registration. The current registration rules are difficult to comply with. Although the Electoral Reform Commission has proposed changes, those haven’t been implemented yet. Even so, we’ve submitted our application under the existing rules and expect to be registered.” He said JPB supports reforms and would cooperate with the EC if rule changes are implemented. Janatar Dal wants ‘key’ as symbol Another applicant, Janatar Dal, filed its application requesting the key as its symbol. Jannatar Dal convener Brig Gen (retd) Shamim Kamal and member secretary Azam Khan submitted the application. “We’ve fulfilled all registration conditions and formed district and upazila committees as required by the law. The rest now depends on the Commission,” Shamim Kamal told reporters after filing their application. On March 10, the EC invited applications from new political parties seeking registration by 20 April. A total of 65 parties applied within the deadline. The commission later extended the deadline until June 22. New political parties are registered under Article 90A of the Representation of the People Order, 1972. If a party is registered with the EC, it can contest the national election with its own electoral symbol. Now, 50 parties are registered with the EC. The registration of Bangladesh Awami League remains suspended, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is set to regain its registration following a court order.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corp (IRGC) on Sunday said “the criminal American regime” has not learned the lessons of past Middle East wars and will suffer the consequences after bombing Iran. “The US’s repetition of past failed follies demonstrates strategic incompetence and disregard for the realities on the ground in the region,” the IRGC said in a statement. It added that instead of learning from repeated failures, Washington has effectively placed itself on the front lines of aggression by “directly attacking peaceful [nuclear] installations.” According to AL Jazeera, the paramilitary force said the flight locations of the US aircraft that participated in the attack “have been identified and monitored”. The number, dispersion and size of US military bases in the region are not a strength but have doubled their vulnerability, the Revolutionary Guard warned. Earlier today, Iranian state television declared that all American civilians and military personnel in the region are now considered "legitimate targets" in the wake of US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The warning came after US President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces had joined Israel in launching coordinated strikes on Iran. World reacts to US strike on Iran’s nuclear sites “We have completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The US military carried out airstrikes on three locations in Iran early Sunday, marking a direct intervention in Israel’s ongoing offensive aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear infrastructure. The strikes targeted the underground Fordo uranium enrichment facility—considered the heart of Iran’s nuclear defences—with six 15-tonne bunker-buster bombs dropped from B-2 stealth bombers. In addition, 30 Tomahawk cruise missiles were reportedly launched from US submarines, hitting sites in Natanz and Isfahan, according to Fox News. Trump confirmed the operation during an interview, describing it as a “precision mission” aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear capabilities. “All planes are safely on their way home,” he wrote on social media, praising US forces and adding, “Now is the time for peace.” However, Iran announced that its nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Fordo and Natanz showed “no signs of contamination” following US military strikes on the sites. According to Iranian state media, the country’s National Nuclear Safety System Center released a statement confirming that radiation detectors had found no evidence of a radioactive leak. “There is no danger to the residents living around the aforementioned sites,” the statement said. The International Atomic Energy Agency also noted that previous Israeli strikes on similar facilities had not resulted in any detected radiation release in surrounding areas. According to AP, the current military campaign, named “Operation Rising Lion” by Israel, began with coordinated strikes on Iranian nuclear sites on June 13. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the operation targeted multiple nuclear facilities across Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the campaign, calling it a preemptive measure against an “imminent threat to Israel’s very survival” posed by Iran’s nuclear program. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on that day confirmed several senior military officials and scientists were killed in the Israeli airstrikes on Tehran. Among those killed was Iran’s former national security chief, Ali Shamkhani. “The assassination of Ali Shamkhani was also confirmed,” Iranian state media reported. These attacks are considered the most serious Iran has faced since the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

The United States’ attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities has drawn sharp global reaction, with international leaders and humanitarian agencies calling for de-escalation, renewed diplomacy, and respect for international law. Several Arab countries have swiftly issued statements expressing concern and urging de-escalation. Oman, which had been acting as a mediator in nuclear negotiations between the US and Iran, issued a strong condemnation of the strikes. The Gulf state said it “expresses deep concern, denunciation and condemnation of the escalation resulting from the direct air strikes launched by the United States”. Saudi Arabia, a key regional ally of the US, denounced “the violation of Iran’s sovereignty and stresses the need for restraint”, while calling on the international community “to redouble efforts in these extremely sensitive circumstances to reach a political solution”. Qatar’s foreign ministry also reacted with alarm, stating that the rising “dangerous tensions will lead to disastrous repercussions at the regional and international levels.” It added that it “hopes that all parties will exercise wisdom and restraint at this time.” Egypt echoed similar concerns, warning against "the dangers of the region sliding into further chaos and tension," and emphasized that "political solutions and diplomatic negotiations, not a military solution, are the only way out of the crisis". Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun expressed grave concern, stating that "the bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities raises the level of fear of an escalation of tensions that would threaten security and stability in more than one region and country". European leaders also expressed deep concern over the consequences of the strike warning against further escalation in the Middle East. European Council President Antonio Costa urged “respect for international law and nuclear safety” in light of the developments. “Diplomacy remains the only way to bring peace and security to the Middle East region. Too many civilians will once again be the victims of a further escalation,” Costa said, adding that he is alarmed by the latest developments. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Stability must be the priority” and called for “Iran to engage in a credible diplomatic solution.”“The negotiating table is the only place to end this crisis,” she said. Germany’s Chancellor Merz has also called on Tehran to resume talks. A German government spokesperson said Merz urged Iran to immediately re-enter nuclear negotiations with the United States so a diplomatic resolution can be achieved. Iran, however, rejected the notion that it had walked away from diplomacy. In a social media post, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi questioned, “How can Iran return to something it never left, let alone blew up?” Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned of “irreversible consequences” if the situation spirals into a wider war. Police disperse unsuccessful candidates of teacher registration exam “The intensification and spread of major military operations in the Middle East risk engulfing the region – and the world – in a war with irreversible consequences,” ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric said in a statement. “The world cannot absorb limitless war. Upholding international humanitarian law is not a choice – it is an obligation. Civilians must be spared from the conduct of hostilities,” she said. Spoljaric noted that the ICRC has delegations in both Iran and Israel and is scaling up operations to meet rising humanitarian needs.“[However], no humanitarian response can substitute for political will to prioritise peace, stability and human life,” she added. In the UK, Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds confirmed that Britain was informed ahead of the strike but was not asked to participate or allow the use of its Diego Garcia base. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who earlier endorsed the US move, is set to consult with allies. “Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon,” Starmer had said. The European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also joined the chorus urging restraint. “Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon, as it would be a threat to international security,” she said in a post on X. “I urge all sides to step back, return to the negotiating table and prevent further escalation. The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has cautioned that the recent U.S. strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities could escalate into a far-reaching conflict, stressing that adherence to international law is a duty, not an option. “The intensification and spread of major military operations in the Middle East risk engulfing the region – and the world – in a war with irreversible consequences,” ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric said in a statement. Spoljaric emphasized that the world cannot withstand unending warfare and reiterated the legal obligation to protect civilians during armed conflict. “The world cannot absorb limitless war. Upholding international humanitarian law is not a choice – it is an obligation. Civilians must be spared from the conduct of hostilities,” she said. The ICRC chief noted that the organization maintains a presence in both Iran and Israel and is preparing to expand operations to meet growing humanitarian needs. “[However], no humanitarian response can substitute for political will to prioritise peace, stability and human life,” she added.

Police on Sunday dispersed a group of unsuccessful candidates of the 18th Teacher Registration Examination who were demonstrating in front of the Jatiya Press Club demanding that all viva voce participants be declared successful. The protests which began in the morning turned chaotic around 11:30am when law enforcers used water cannons and sound grenades to disperse the protesters, said witnesses. Rajibul Islam, one of the protesters,  said, “The exam ended on May 31, and the results were published on June 4. This was not a proper viva. How can they publish such results? And how can so many candidates fail? We do not accept this.” US deploys B-2 stealth bombers in strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station Khalid Mansur said the protesters have temporarily stepped back following police intervention. “We are still in discussions with them. Senior officials are also involved in the talks. Further action will be taken based on the outcome,” he said. Earlier around 11am, police intercepted the protesters as they tried to advance from in front of the Press Club. When asked to leave, the demonstrators refused and continued chanting slogans, prompting the police to take action around 11:30am to disperse them, said the OC. A section of the 23,000 unsuccessful candidates had gathered demanding that all viva voce participants be granted teacher registration certificates. They said despite passing the preliminary and written exams and performing well in the viva, they were marked as failed. The demonstrators eventually left the Press Club area around 2pm.

Most political parties have agreed to a proposal limiting an individual’s tenure as prime minister to a maximum of 10 years in their lifetime, excluding three parties that had alternative views, said Junaid Saki, the chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon. He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Sunday following the second phase of discussions held between political parties and the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital. Jonaid Saki said, “There has been a discussion on how many terms a person can serve as prime minister. A proposal was placed suggesting that the prime minister could take oath a maximum of two times. The Election Reform Commission proposed that the prime minister's tenure should be two terms.” “Now, there is a complexity around the terms and the duration. ‘Term’ refers to a full five-year period or however long the parliament remains, while ‘two times’ could mean two appointments within the same term. This has led to discussions around defining the duration more clearly,” he added. 5-point demand: DMC students issue 24-hour ultimatum Saki explained, “A new proposal has been brought forward suggesting the prime minister's tenure be defined by years rather than terms. That is, a person may serve as prime minister for a maximum of 10 years in their lifetime. After this proposal was placed, we requested time for mutual discussions, and the National Consensus Commission approved it. The three parties have put forward alternative proposals.  Alongside these, there are other unresolved issues—such as the representation of women in parliament and the matter of direct elections, appointments to constitutional positions through a constitutional commission, formation of an upper house based on proportional representation and its powers, the balance between two houses, presidential elections and the balance of power between the president and prime minister—on which discussions have been held. Consensus has been reached on some points, while disagreements remain on others,” he said.  The Ganosamhati Andolon leader said, “We aim to reach as much consensus as possible through continued discussions on these matters. A follow-up meeting will be held next Wednesday.  However, through these talks, we are moving towards broader unity. If we can build further consensus, Bangladesh’s democratic reconstruction will advance in a meaningful way.”

At least two dozens of political parties rushed to the Election Commission till 2pm on Sunday, the last day for the submission of applications seeking registrations. The chiefs and other leaders of the parties are arriving in person to file the applications for registration. The parties that submitted applications by 2pm include Janatar Party Bangladesh (JPB), Ganadal, Bangladesh Janajote Party (BAJPA), Bangladesh Republican Party (BRP), Bangladesh Samata Party, Bangladesh Faraezi Andolon, Bangladesh Citizen Party, Islami Oikya Jote, Notun Bangladesh Party (NBP), Bangladesh Jagrat Janata Party, Bangladesh Gano Biplobi Party, National Awami Party (Bhasani NAP), Bangladesh Khudra Nrigoshthi Federation, Janatar Dal, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Janata Party, Bangladesh Samyabadi Dal (ML), Bangladesh Nagorik Party (BNP), Jatiyo Nyaybichar Party, Bangladesh Democratic Party (BDP) and National Democratic Party (NDP). JPB seeks ‘elephant’ as symbol: Janata Party Bangladesh (JPB) applied for registration with a request to use the elephant as its electoral symbol. Submitting the application at Nirbachan Bhaban, JPB Secretary General Shawkat Mahmud said, “We’ve filed the application for political party registration. The current registration rules are difficult to comply with. Although the Electoral Reform Commission has proposed changes, those haven’t been implemented yet. Even so, we’ve submitted our application under the existing rules and expect to be registered.” He said JPB supports reforms and would cooperate with the EC if rule changes are implemented. Janatar Dal wants ‘key’ as symbol: Another applicant, Janatar Dal, filed its application requesting the key as its symbol. Jannatar Dal convener Brig Gen (Retd) Shamim Kamal and member secretary Azam Khan submitted the application. “We’ve fulfilled all registration conditions and formed district and upazila committees as required by the law. The rest now depends on the Commission,” Shamim Kamal told reporters after filing their application. The National Citizen Party (NCP) is supposed to file its registration application in the afternoon. On March 10, the EC invited applications from new political parties seeking registration by 20 April. A total of 65 parties applied within the deadline. The commission later extended the deadline until June 22. New political parties are registered under Article 90A of the Representation of the People Order, 1972. If a party is registered with the EC, it can contest the national election with its own electoral symbol. Now, 50 parties are registered with the EC. The registration of Bangladesh Awami League remains suspended, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is set to regain its registration following a court order.
